Irregular periods, facial hair, hair loss, and weight gain around the abdomen can be signs of imbalancced hormones like in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or Polycystic Ovary Disorder (PCOD). However, it’s essential to get a proper diagnosis through medical tests because these symptoms can overlap with other conditions too.

In Ayurveda, we look at body’s doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — to understand what’s happening internally. PCOS is generally associated with an imbalance in all three doshas - Vata causes irregular periods, Pitta contributes to excess body hair and acne, whereas Kapha can lead to weight gain.

To begin with an Ayurvedic approach before any medical testings, you can start by observing your diet and lifestyle. Foods that increase Kapha, like dairy, fried foods, and sugary snacks can be minimized. Include more whole grains, fresh vegetables, and spices like turmeric and cumin to help balance your agni, or digestive fire, which can be sluggish in Kapha imbalance.

Daily exercise, such as brisk walking or yoga, can help manage weight and stress, a common exacerbator of PCOS symptoms. Try to have meals at consistent times each day to stabilize your body’s rhythms, this can help regulate your cycle.

Practices like pranayama and meditation can also be helpful to reduce stress and maintain balance, spend at least 10 minutes daily on these practices, preferably during early morning or evening to center the body and mind. Herbal supplements like Ashwagandha or Shatavari might be beneficial but should be taken under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

It’s crucial to get a clear diagnosis through medical testing like blood tests and an ultrasound. If you suspect a hormonal imbalance, consider consulting with a healthcare provider for proper evaluations. In Ayurveda, a personalized approach is essential to cater to individual constitutions and current imbalances.

To determine if you have PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), consider consulting with a healthcare professional who can perform necessary tests, including hormone levels, ultrasound, and physical examination. But for a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective on your symptoms, let’s look at the potential imbalances in your doshas: the irregular periods, excessive hair growth, and hair fall may suggest a vata-pitta imbalance. This could affect the reproductive and hormonal functions.

For a self-check on whether your abdominal weight is due to PCOS or general fat accumulation, feel whether the bloating is consistent and whether it’s accompanied by other symptoms like excessive hunger or unusual cravings, which might suggest a kapha imbalance influencing your metabolism and agni (digestive fire).

To manage symptoms, focus on balancing doshas naturally. Increase agni with foods like ginger and turmeric, which can aid in metabolism and balance hormones. Eat balanced meals at regular timings, avoiding excessive sugars and processed foods. Incorporate regular yoga and pranayama to manage weight and stress, both of which can impact symptoms.

Apply an oil like sesame or castor on your scalp and massage gently to reduce hair fall. Applying a turmeric paste on the face can help manage facial hair growth over time.

Despite these suggestions, irregular periods and hair changes could signal something needing medical evaluation. It’s crucial to consult a physician to rule out conditions like PCOS before taking any herbal or hormonal treatments. They can confirm the nature of your belly concerns and guide you on proper tests and next steps.
