Hello Deepthi, Your daughterâs under eye circles may be due to anemia. The skin under the eyes is very thin, and when blood oxygen levels are low, the deoxygenated blood (which appears darker) becomes more prominent, causing the area to appear darker. In some cases, iron deficiency can also lead to increased melanin production in the skin, further contributing to the dark circles. So , donât worry, give her medicines on time ,eye circles will disappear when anemia gets treated . Apply aloevera under eyes twice a day. . Avoid screen time 1hr before sleep. . Deworm her if not done in last 6 months. Reach out for any further query. Regards, Dr. Anupriya
Hey, Since she already has known iron deficiency and supplements havenât resolved the circles, Iâd recommend a follow-up blood test after a few months of supplementation to check if her iron stores (ferritin) and hemoglobin have normalized, and to explore other deficiencies or allergy issues
Dark under eye circles can indeed be frustrating, especially when factors like sufficient sleep and stress management are already in check. In Ayurveda, such concerns may be associated with a Vata imbalance or could arise from Ama (toxins) accumulation, poor Rasa dhatu circulation, or imbalances in Pitta dosha affecting the Rakta dhatu (blood).
First, letâs adress the iron deficiency. Iron-rich foods should be incorporated into her diet, as supplements alone sometimes might not be enough. Consider including spinach, lentils, beetroot, pomegranate, and sesame seeds. These are good sources of iron, which boost hemoglobin levels and improve circulation.
Hydration is keyâensure adequate intake of water as dehydration can worsen the appearance of under eye circles. Limit the intake of salty snacks and processed foods as they can lead to water retention, making circles more prominent.
In terms of topical treatments, an Ayurvedic remedy involves applying a paste made from almond oil mixed with a pinch of turmeric under the eyes. Let it sit for about 10 minutes before gently washing it off. The nourishing properties of almond oil, combined with turmericâs anti-inflammatory effects, can support skin health.
Encourage moderate exercise like yoga or a brisk walk; it can enhance overall blood circulation, positively influencing the Rasa and Rakta dhatus. Ensure sheâs getting some sunlight exposure for vitamin D synthesis, supporting overall vitality.
Lastly, consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner for a detailed Prakriti assessment to address any specific dosha imbalances. Though these recommendations target the root causes, do keep in mind that consistency and patience are essential in experiencing tangible improvements.
Dark under eye circles can indeed be multifactorial, especially in young individuals, even with regular sleep and no apparent stress. Given that your daughter is dealing with iron deficiency, it is good that sheâs on supplements. Iron deficiency can affect the Rasa Dhatu (the primary nutritive fluid) and Rakta Dhatu (blood) in Ayurvedic terms, leading to poor circulation and dark circles.
First, ensure that her digestive fire, or Agni, is functioning well. Sometimes supplements are not effectively absorbed due to weak Agni. To enhance digestion, consider including a small amount of hing (asafoetida) and jeera (cumin) in her meals. A cup of fennel tea in the morning may also aid digestion and mineral absorption.
Second, assess her diet. Even with supplements, the diet should be rich in iron and vitamin C to assist absorption. Include green leafy vegetables like spinach, methi (fenugreek), fruits like amla (Indian gooseberry) and citrus fruits, beetroot, and pomegranate. Curry leaves can also be beneficial and can be included in her meals.
Applying almond oil gently under the eyes before bedtime can help nourish the skin and improve circulation in that area. A paste of turmeric and milk can also be applied for its soothing properties, once or twice a week.
Ensure her fluid intake is adequate. Proper hydration is essential for maintaining optimal blood flow and skin health. Avoid caffeinated drinks and processed foods, which can impair circulation and exacerbate the appearance of dark circles.
If after incorporating these lifestyle and dietary changes for a few weeks there is no improvement, it might be worth consulting a dermatologist to rule out any other underlying causes. Itâs always good to make sure other factors are not contributing to the condition.
