Dealing with keloids, particularly those on the ear, involves a multifaceted treatment approach that incorporates Ayurvedic principles. Since surgical excision has resulted in keloid recurrence, we need to address the underlying dosha imbalance—commonly, keloids involve an imbalance of Pitta and Vata doshas in skin.
Firstly, it is crucial to manage inflammation and promote balanced healing of tissues by following an anti-inflammatory diet. Foods to include are those rich in antioxidants and cooling properties, such as cucumbers, bitter gourd, and green leafy vegetables. Avoid spicy, fermented, or processed foods as these may aggravate Pitta.
Topically, applying Pinda Thailam can be beneficial. It’s an Ayurvedic oil known for its calming and tissue healing properties. Warm the oil slightly and apply gently to the keloid twice daily. Turmeric and sandalwood paste can also be applied to the keloid as they help reduce size, discoloration, and underlying inflammation due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Mixing turmeric with honey and applying it over the keloid can also be effective.
Internally, consuming herbs like Gotu Kola (Mandookaparni) may aid due to its potential to enhance collagen structure, thus promoting healthy tissue formation. A commonly recommended supplement is the combination of Triphala, due to its detoxifying effects and the way it promotes balance in all tissues, take this once before sleeping.
Massaging around the keloid—not directly onto it—with castor oil can help in softening and calming down the area, support regular nerve impulses, and reduce excessive scar formation.
Since keloid growth is progressive, consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner could provide a more tailored approach, possibly integrating Panchakarma or other detoxification methods. If there’s any sign of infection or rapid growth, immediate medical consultation should be sought to ensure it doesn’t impede further ear functions or lead to complications.
Rest assured, Ayurveda provides numerous ways to manage and potentially reduce the occurrence and size of keloids, yet it’s also crucial to maintain ongoing monitoring and appropriate medical input.
When dealing with a keloid, particularly one of considerable size, it’s vital to address the underlying causes such as dosha imbalances and tissue health. In your case, the repeated irritation from piercings could have led to a disturbance in the pitta and kapha doshas, contributing to the keloid formation.
First, consider local application of Ayurvedic formulations like Kumkumadi Tailam or a paste made with haridra (turmeric) and neem leaves. Apply gently on the keloid daily, preferably before bedtime, and leave it overnight. This may help in reducing inflammation and controlling excess tissue growth.
Incorporate internal medications that balance the doshas and purify the blood. Trikatu churna, taken with honey, can aid in digestion and metabolism, which are crucial for overall tissue health. This should be taken once in the morning on an empty stomach, but consult a practitioner to determine the right dosage for you.
Additionally, include ayurvedic decoctions like Manjishtadi Kashayam to improve blood circulation and help cleanse the skin from within. Take 15 ml mixed with an equal amount of water twice a day before meals.
Diet also plays a role. Favor foods that reduce pitta and kapha—like fresh vegetables, fruits, and light grains. Minimize spicy, fried, or high-fat foods.
It’s crucial to stay in touch with healthcare professionals for this. If there’s any rapid change in size or symptoms like pain, see a dermatologist or surgeon, as it might require medical intervention. Always balance traditional remedies with appropriate modern medical oversight to ensure the best care for your condition.
