Psoriasis can indeed be persistent, and managing it through Ayurveda might offer a holistic approach. Your mother’s overall health is a good starting point. In Ayurveda, psoriasis, considered as “Ekakushtha,” is seen as an imbalance in the Vata and Kapha doshas, and also involves the accumulation of toxins (ama) in the body.
Begin with diet modifications. Encourage her to follow a diet that pacifies Vata and Kapha while also aiding in detoxification. Warm, cooked meals, seasoned with digestive spices like cumin, coriander, and turmeric may help. Avoiding cold and heavy foods like deep-fried items, excess dairy, and refined wheat can reduce ama. Include bitter and astringent foods such as fenugreek, bitter gourd, and leafy greens, which help cleanse the blood.
Hydration is essential: Warm water and herbal teas can support digestion and toxin clearance. Triphala at night, about 1 teaspoon with warm water, aids in gentle detoxification and supports in enhancing agni, or digestive fire.
Regular physical activity aids circulation, but it’s equally important to maintain a routine that balances rest. Gentle exercises like yoga or tai chi can be beneficial, especially practices supporting skin health and overall strength.
Topically, after consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner, you could consider applications of Aloe Vera or coconut oil, known for its soothing properties. Medicated oils like Mahamarichyadi or Triphala oil, massaged gently, can also help, but should be chosen based on her specific prakriti and condition.
Stress management, such as through pranayama and meditation, can be pivotal, as stress can exacerbate psoriasis. Having a well-structured daily routine (dinacharya) helps create balance and supports overall health.
Ensure to continue visiting a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. They can tailor an individualized plan, understanding her prakriti in depth, and adjusting treatments as needed. In severe cases, Ayurvedic detox procedures like Panchakarma might be recommended, but should always be under professional supervision. Always monitor her condition and consult professionals when needed.
Psoriasis can be quite persistent but Ayurveda can offer some strategies to manage it holistically. First, we must consider possible imbalances in the doshas — particularly an aggravation of the vata and pitta doshas, leading to the skin’s dryness, redness, and scaling. Avoiding factors that increase these doshas is key, primarily by identifying any emotional stress, dietary habits, or lifestyle factors that may be a trigger.
Diet is crucial; have her follow a pitta-pacifying diet, emphasizing foods like bitter gourd, green leafy vegetables, and cooling fruits like watermelon. Try to avoid hot, spicy, oily, or sour foods as these can aggravate pitta. Supporting agni, or digestive fire, is essential for overall health. Have her start the day with warm water infused with lemon and a pinch of turmeric, which can aid digestion and detoxification.
Externally, herbal oils like coconut oil mixed with neem oil can be applied to soothe and moisturize the skin. This should be done gently, once or twice daily. Also, bathing in water mixed with a little neem or licorice powder can help calm skin irritation.
Stress management is paramount, as stress can often trigger psoriasis flare-ups. Practices like yoga and pranayama, particularly the cooling breathing exercises like Shitali or Sheetkari, can help.
Encourage her to regularly consult an Ayurvedic practitioner who can tailor remedies to her specific needs. Psoriasis can be interconnected with deeper imbalances, so having a comprehensive approach is vital. If her condition worsens, a qualified health professional should be contacted to carefully monitor her health.
