Mild DNS to left side - #3594

Owen

I’ve been diagnosed with mild DNS to the left side (deviated nasal septum) after struggling with breathing issues for a while. It’s not severe enough for surgery, but it does cause congestion, especially at night, and sometimes I get sinus headaches. I’m looking for natural or Ayurvedic remedies to manage mild DNS to the left side without invasive procedures. From what I’ve read, nasya (nasal oil therapy) could be helpful in opening up the nasal passages. Has anyone tried nasya for DNS-related issues? Also, are there any breathing exercises or yoga poses that can improve airflow and reduce congestion caused by a deviated septum? I’m wondering if certain herbal treatments or steam inhalations could also help. Are there Ayurvedic herbs or oils specifically recommended for mild DNS to the left side? I’d love to hear from anyone who has managed similar problems naturally – what worked for you, and how long did it take to see improvements?

Doctors' responses

In Ayurveda, managing a deviated nasal septum (DNS) and related symptoms like congestion can be effectively addressed through nasya therapy, which involves the application of medicated oils into the nasal passages. This helps to lubricate and clear the sinuses, reducing congestion and inflammation. Sesame oil or special herbal oils like Anu taila or Brahmi oil are often recommended for nasya therapy, as they help balance the doshas and open the nasal passages. Additionally, certain yoga practices like pranayama (breathing exercises), particularly the Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing), can improve airflow and reduce congestion by enhancing the functioning of the respiratory system. Steam inhalation with herbs like eucalyptus or ginger can also soothe the sinuses and relieve pressure. Regular practice of these therapies, along with maintaining a diet that supports Kapha dosha (such as avoiding excess dairy and cold foods), can help manage symptoms over time. However, it’s important to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor the treatments to your specific needs.

Ah, dealing with mild DNS on the left side can be quite a nuisance, especially when it’s messing with your nighttime breathing and those pesky headaches. You’re spot on with thinking about nasya—it can be a game-changer for nasal blockages. What you might want to try is Anu Taila or Shadbindu Taila for nasya. These are herbal oils specifically formulated to clear the nasal passages and balance Kapha dosha, which can cause congestion.

Here’s a quick rundown on how to do it: In the morning, just after you wake up, lie down on your back and slightly tilt your head back. Add 2-3 drops of the oil into each nostril. Take it easy for a few minutes and let the oil do its magic. You might not see huge changes overnight, but give it a week or two and you’ll likely notice some improvement.

For breathing, alternate nostril breathing, or Nadi Shodhana, is great for balancing your system and easing nasal blockages. It’s simple: close the right nostril with your thumb, inhale through the left, then close the left nostril and exhale through the right. Keep alternating for about 5-10 mins. It’ll help clear out the sinuses and get the prana flowing more smoothly.

When it comes to herbs, inhaling steam with a few drops of eucalyptus oil or herbs like Tulsi leaves might really help open things up. But make sure not to scald yourself—keep it warm, not hot. Try doing this a couple of times a week and see how you feel! Some people also find relief with a neti pot for nasal irrigation, using warm saline water— just be gentle.

In Ayurveda, balancing your diet according to your Prakriti is crucial too. Eating warm, cooked meals instead of cold or raw ones can support your agni (digestive fire), potentially reducing Kapha accumulation that leads to mucus.

Honestly, it’s all about consistency and seeing what your body responds best to. Experience varies from person to person, but these methods work well for many folks. Keep me posted, and remember, your body is unique so what works for one might not work the same for another. Stay patient, the effects do usually kick in gradually!

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
