does beetroot increase weight - #37405
I am a bit confused about something regarding my diet and wanted to see if anyone has insight. Lately, I’ve been incorporating beetroot into my meals because I've heard its super healthy and packed with nutrients. I've started having beetroot juice for breakfast and adding roasted beetroot to my salads. But, I’ve noticed that my weight has gone up a little and I’m honestly not sure why. Does beetroot increase weight? I’ve read mixed things online, some say it can help with weight loss because of the fiber content, but then I see others mentioning that it’s high in sugar. I just want to know what I should believe! I feel almost like I’m doing this all to eat healthy and then bam, the scale says otherwise. Is this normal or am I just imagining things? Like, I don’t want to cut it out completely since I really enjoy beetroot, but now I'm starting to feel like maybe it’s doing more harm than good for my weight. Does beetroot actually have any direct influence on weight gain? Should I be worried? Any advice or personal experiences would be super helpful!

Beetroot, in itself, isn’t directly responsible for significant weight gain. It’s a nutrient-dense vegetable, low in calories but high in important vitamins and minerals, making it a heart-healthy choice for many people. It’s true that beetroot contains natural sugars, contributing to its higher glycemic index compared to some other vegetables, but it’s unlikely to be the sole cause of weight increases you’ve experienced.
Focusing on Ayurvedic insights, beetroot is generally considered a cooling food, beneficial for balancing Pitta dosha due its soothing nature. However, if your Kapha dosha is dominant or imbalanced, higher sugar intake may become an issue, potentially leading to weight gain. Ensuring you consume beetroot in moderation, aligning with your dosha balance, can help manage this effect.
A few practical tips — consider portion sizes when consuming beetroot. Beetroot juice, while nutritious, can concentrate sugars, similar to how fruit juices work. You might want to monitor how much juice you’re drinking. Also, balancing your diet with a variety of foods can help optimize your metabolic fire, or Agni. Also look at your overall dietary patterns, lifestyle, and activities, as even small changes here and there can affect weight.
Including beetroot in meals where it’s well-cooked could improve its digestibility. If consumed raw and in excess, it may sometimes disturb Vata dosha, causing digestive issues indirectly influencing weight through water retention or bloating. Cook or steam your beetroot, seasoning them with digestive spices like cumin, or pepper.
Observe how your body reacts to beetroot over time, but ensure it’s not an isolated food regarded as a culprit. Our bodies respond to comprehensive dietary and lifestyle factors. If you see persistent weight changes, consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can determine your unique constitution and advice accordingly! Explore increasing your physical activity, ensure adequate rest, and practice mindful eating – these all support holistic balance and wellness.
