Dark pigmentation around the mouth can be quite vexing, and there often are multiple factors involved. In Siddha-Ayurveda, we’d start by considering potential imbalances in your doshas — primarily excess Pitta or Kapha could be contributing to this issue. Let’s consider a few steps to help address this naturally.
First, adopting a gentle but consistent skincare routine may aid with pigmentation. Regular exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and encourage new cell growth. You can create a natural scrub using chickpea flour (besan) and a little turmeric with milk or rose water to form a paste. Gently use this mixture 2-3 times a week around the affected area. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and brightening properties, helpful for pigmentation. However, be mindful of the turmeric’s staining tendency.
Incorporating dietary changes can also be beneficial. Reduce consumption of spicy, oily, and acidic foods that increase Pitta. Including cooling foods like cucumbers, melons, and fennel can balance Pitta dosha. Herbal teas like chamomile or coriander seed tea can also play a role in maintaining your internal balance.
Topically, a paste of sandalwood powder and rose water applied as a mask can soothe and potentially lighten the pigmentation over time. Use this 2-3 times weekly.
Finally, lifestyle adjustments like using sunscreen to prevent further pigmentation, managing stress through yoga or meditation, and ensuring good hydration levels can complement these efforts.
If pigmentation persists or worsens, consider consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner who can tailor advice based on your prakriti (individual constitution) and current health. It’s essential any serious underlying causes receive prompt attention with the help of a healthcare provider.
