why ear is itching - #38462
I am really confused and kinda frustrated. Lately, my left ear has been itching like crazy, and I have no clue why ear is itching so much. It started a couple weeks ago, and at first, I thought it was just some dry skin, you know. But then it became this constant annoying itch, and I can't help but scratch it which I know I shouldn't. I don't even have allergies, or any colds, so why ear is itching? I tried using a bit of coconut oil thinking maybe that would help, but the itch just won’t go away. Sometimes I feel this weird slight pain and my hearing feels a bit muffled too, which makes me think maybe I should be worried?? UGH! I saw something online about possible ear infections, but nothing is really red or anything like that. Is there like an ayurvedic approach to figure out why ear is itching?? Maybe some herbs or oils that can soothe it? I don't wanna just keep using creams or drops from the pharmacy, but I'm at my wits end here. If anyone has dealt with this or has suggestions, please help me!!

Ear itching can be both irritating and bewildering, and it’s good that you’re seeking a deeper understanding of the underlying causes. In Ayurveda, persistent ear itching could be linked to an imbalance in the Vata dosha, as Vata governs all things related to dryness and air. This imbalance might be contributing to the dry skin sensation and the itchiness you’re experiencing in your ear.
Your use of coconut oil was a good instinct, as it’s known for its moisturizing properties, yet, it seems not have relieved the problem. Sometimes, persistent itchiness can indicate a deeper issue, such as an inner ear imbalance or even a low-grade infection, especially since you’ve mentioned pain and muffled hearing. While relying solely on topical treatments might offer temporary relief, it’s important to address the root cause.
First, consider incorporating a few Ayurvedic suggestions. To balance Vata, ensure you’re staying hydrated and consume warm, moist foods, spiced with ginger or cumin. Applying sesame oil gently warm it slightly, can help to lubricate and soothe the ear canal, providing relief from dryness. However, ensure you use only a few drops and monitor for any change in symptoms.
Herbal remedies like Triphala might be useful due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Taking about 1/2 tsp of Triphala powder with warm water in the evening can help balance your doshas overall.
In case of underlying infections, if the symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a professional including an Ayurveda practitioner is advisable.
Avoid inserting objects in the ear that might worsen irritation. Also, consider practices like Nasya, applying a drop or two of lukewarm ghee or sesame oil in nostrils might indirectly assist in the health of your ears and head region overall.
Given the complications with potential mild infections and affected hearing, it’s recommended to seek proper guidance, possibly from a blend of modern medical advice alongside traditional Ayurveda.
