how to remove dark around mouth - #38680

Skylar

I am dealing with this really annoying dark pigmentation around my mouth, and honestly, it's driving me a bit nuts. I've tried some creams from the pharmacy, but nothing seems to work. My sister mentioned that she had a similar issue and found some Ayurvedic remedies that helped her. I’ve been drinking tons of water and eating healthier too, trying to see if that would help but still no luck. The dark spots just won’t budge! I thought maybe it was from my constant sun exposure or maybe even something related to my hormones, but I can’t figure it out. I remember when I first noticed it, I was feeling quite stressed at work, and I thought maybe that's it? Stress pigmentation or something? I read a bit about how to remove dark around mouth using natural ingredients like turmeric and aloe vera, but I have no idea how to mix them or use them properly. Plus, I’m worried about using things that might irritate my skin. Is there any specific Ayurvedic approach you guys recommend? Like, which herbs or practices could actually help to remove dark around mouth for good? Or is it one of those things that just takes time? Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses

Dark pigmentation around the mouth can indeed be frustrating, and importantly, Ayurveda offers comprehensive methods to address it by identifying and treating the root causes inherently, such as stress or skin imbalance issues. You mentioned stress — which can lead to a dosha imbalance particularly Pitta dosha, contributing to skin pigmentation.

Consider incorporating Turmeric and Aloe Vera into your routine. Turmeric is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and lightening properties, and Aloe Vera for its soothing and hydrating effects. Here’s a simple and safe way to use them: Create a paste by mixing 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder with a tablespoon of fresh aloe vera gel. Apply this mixture around your mouth, leave it for about 20 minutes and then gently rinse it off using lukewarm water. Do this routine 2-3 times a week, preferably in the evening, when you’re done with the daily sun-exposure.

Diet plays a vital role too. Focus on a Pitta-pacifying diet which includes more sweet, bitter and astringent tastes, as these reduce Pitta’s heat. Avoid overly spicy or acidic foods, which can worsen pigmentation. Including foods like leafy greens, sweet fruits, cucumber, and melons can be very beneficial.

Moreover, external stressors are an underlying factor. Practice mindful stress-relieving techniques such as meditation or yoga. Even a daily routine of 10-15 minutes can create significant changes in stress levels.

Herbal aids like Triphala, which is good for detoxifying the body, can be incorporated into your regimen. Take Triphala at bedtime with warm water as it helps improve digestion and purify the system, which in turn positively affects your skin.

Remember, consistent becomes the key! Ayurvedic remedies take patience and regularity before you start seeing changes. It’s also wise to avoid prolonged sun exposure and to apply a gentle natural sunscreen when outdoors. If symptoms persists, consider consulting a professional Ayurvedic practitioner for personalised guidance.

Dark pigmentation around the mouth, often bothersome, typically stems from factors like sun exposure, stress, and hormonal fluctuations, just as you suspected. The Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition offers several gentle, yet effective approaches to help balance your skin tone and support overall skin health by addressing possible dosha imbalances, particularly if pitta and kapha imbalances play a role. Here are some practical suggestions:

1. Turmeric and Aloe Vera: These ingredients can indeed help lighten skin naturally due to their anti-inflammatory properties. To make a simple paste, mix one teaspoon of turmeric with a tablespoon of fresh aloe vera gel. Apply this mix directly to the affected area. Leave it on for about 20 minutes before washing off with lukewarm water. You can use this remedy every other day. It’s generally safe, but always do a patch test first to check for any skin irritation.

2. Sandalwood Paste: Sandalwood has cooling properties that can help regulate pitta and soothe irritated skin. Mix sandalwood powder with a few drops of rose water to form a paste. Apply this around your mouth, keep it there for about 10-15 minutes, then rinse. Regular application can help gradually lighten pigmentation.

3. Diet and Lifestyle Adjustments: Consider incorporating leafy greens, fruits, and herbs like coriander into your diet to support detoxification. Turmeric milk, consumed at night, can also help address underlying overheating or stress you might be facing. It’s important to manage stress levels to balance doshas; practices like yoga and pranayama can be beneficial.

4. Exfoliation and Sun Protection: Gently exfoliate the area once a week using a natural scrub made of oats or gram flour to slough off dead skin cells. Protect your skin from further sun damage by applying a natural sunscreen containing ingredients like carrot seed or zinc oxide.

5. Triphala Powder: Taken internally, triphala can aid digestion and detoxifying processes, supporting healthy skin. Consume it in a small amount with warm water before bed.

It’s key to remember that natural treatments often require consistent application and patience. Consistency in following these remedies and adjustments, as well as nurturing your overall mental and physical health, is essential for visible results. However, if you notice any irritation or persistent worsening of the pigmentation, please consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any other underlying conditions.
