oil is good for hair or not - #39503
I am really worried about my hair lately, and I keep wondering if oil is good for hair or not. I've been experiencing some serious dryness and frizz, more than usual, and it's driving me nuts! I read somewhere that applying oils can help, but then I also see some articles saying it can actually make things worse??? I mean, I’ve tried coconut oil, which some friends swore by, but it just felt heavy on my hair and didn’t do much. Then I tried argan oil, thinking it might be a bit lighter, but I can't really tell if oil is good for hair or not based on my experience here. My hair recently got super brittle, and I'm freaking out a lil bit. I did a few tests and found out I have some split ends. Then, there's this itch that I get on my scalp sometimes... I even wondered if it's from the oil. I used to love using olive oil too, but now i don't know if I should just stay away from all oils altogether or stick with something. Like, do oils actually nourish the hair, or do they just add to the problems I already have? I'm really confused and hoping for some clarity on this question of whether oil is good for hair or not. Should I keep experimenting or just let it be? Help!

When it comes to understanding whether oil is good for hair or not, Ayurveda offers valuable insights. Oils can indeed benefit the hair but their effects can differ depending on your unique hair type and overall body constitution, what we call in Ayurveda as your “prakriti”. In some cases, especially where there’s an imbalance in the Vata dosha, oils can provide essential nourishment and moisture, combating problems like dryness and frizziness.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, the right choice and application method of hair oil can contribute positively to hair health. For instance, when there is excessive dryness and frizziness, using heavier oils like sesame or coconut can provide deep nourishment. But, as you’ve noticed, coconut oil might feel heavy. This reaction might signify an imbalance in how your scalp or hair responds to the oil, or even the method of application, timing or even temperature.
If you find oils too heavy, consider using lighter ones such as Ayurveda’s praised Bhringraj oil or Amla oil, known for their balancing properties and ability to promote a healthier scalp, reduce frizz, and add shine without being too greasy. Before applying, warming the oil slightly can enhance absorption. Gentle scalp massage can stimulate circulation and enhance delivery of nutrients.
Your experience with itching could be a reaction to how the oil is interacting with your scalp or possibly an indication of a pitta imbalance. Make sure to wash the oils thoroughly. Failure to do so might lead to residue buildup, potentially causing itchiness and other irritations.
If experimenting with oils seems complicated or cumbersome, begin with small, controlled tests. Apply a little to a small section of your hair or scalp for a few times, to assess how your hair and scalp react. Consistency is key; you might not see instant results, but regular application — for at least twice a week — could improve your hair.
For immediate results on hair brittleness and breakage, ensure your diet is nutrient-dense. Focus on including proteins, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants which are beneficial for hair health. Definitely hydrate well, as internal hydration also affects hair condition. Make sure any other hair products you are using don’t have harsh chemicals that might be compromising your hair, or contributing to synthetic build-up.
Remember, personalized approaches in Ayurveda are paramount, so if possible seek a consultation with a specialist who can better individualize treatment.
