can we apply ghee on face overnight - #40653

Gabriel

I am really confused about something and hoping you guys can help me out. Recently I read somewhere that ghee is super good for the skin, like moisturizes and gives a nice glow, right? So, I started using it, applying some on my face before sleep. But now I’m wondering, can we apply ghee on face overnight? I mean, I’ve tried it a few times, but my face feels kinda greasy in the morning, like more than I bargained for! I have oily skin, and while the ghee does seem to help with dryness, I’m worried if leaving it on overnight might even cause more breakouts or something. And then there's this thing I heard, that ghee has healing properties too? Like, I sometimes get these little red patches and was hoping that maybe ghee could help with that. If it works, can we apply ghee on face overnight safely without messing up my skin?? I also noticed some people saying it’s best to wash it off after a while? Ugh, this skin stuff is really confusing! I just want to know if anyone else has tried this, and what your experience was. Thanks in advance! 🥰

Ghee can indeed be beneficial for the skin due to its moisturizing and healing properties, which are deeply acknowledged in Ayurvedic texts. It can nourish the skin with healthy fats and hydrate it, potentially helping with those red patches you’ve been experiencing. However, given that you have oily skin, it might not be ideal to leave it on overnight. Ghee is dense and might feel heavy for oily skin types, potentially leading to excess oil production.

In Ayurveda, balancing doshas (body constituents) plays a crucial role in skincare. Individuals with oily skin generally have an imbalance in the Kapha dosha. Applying heavy or oily substances like ghee overnight might exacerbate the condition by increasing Kapha, which could indeed lead to breakouts. For oily skin, it’s often recommended to focus on lighter oils or treatments that can hydrate without clogging pores.

A practical approach would be to apply a small amount of ghee to your face for about 15-20 minutes in the evening and then gently cleanse your face using a mild, natural cleanser. This can offer the moisturization and healing properties you seek without overwhelming your skin. Ensure to perform a patch test initially, to see how your skin reacts to it, especially if you’re concerned about potential breakouts.

Moreover, ghee is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which might aid in soothing redness, but it’s important to pay attention to your skin’s reactions. Listen to your skin; if you notice any adverse reactions, it might be best to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can cater specific recommendations according to your prakriti (constitution).

Applying ghee on your face overnight can be beneficial, but it’s essential to consider your skin type first. As you have mentioned your skin is oily, applying ghee, which is inherently oily, can indeed lead to further greasiness in the morning or potentially clog your pores, resulting in breakouts. Ghee is primarily known in Ayurveda for its ability to nourish and hydrate the skin, thanks to its rich content of fatty acids and vitamins. However, for an individual with oily skin, it’s advisable to approach with some caution.

For someone with oily skin, you might want to try a more balanced approach. Instead of leaving ghee overnight, you could apply a thin layer to your face and leave it on for about 15 to 30 minutes before rinsing it off. This allows your skin to absorb its nourishing properties without the risk of clogged pores. To address those little red patches, you could also consider adding a pinch of turmeric to the ghee, as turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory and healing properties. But remember, turmeric might stain your skin a bit, so use very little and wash thoroughly.

Being aware of your doshas, particularly if you have a dominant kapha dosha which typically accompanies oily skin, is also key. Incorporating ways to balance kapha along with your skincare routine can be beneficial. Also, ensure not to use ghee during periods of high humidity or intense heat, as this might aggravate the oiliness further.

If you decide to continue using ghee regularly, always monitor your skin’s reaction. If redness or breakouts increase, it might be a sign that your skin isn’t agreeing with this regimen. Additionally, if you’re dealing with persistent or severe skin issues, consulting with a dermatologist or an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized advice would be a wise step. Always, prioritize what your skin is telling you and proceed according to its cues.
