is yogurt good for psoriasis - #40979

John

I am struggling with my psoriasis lately and can't seem to find anything that helps. My skin is super dry and itchy, and I just want some relief, you know? I read somewhere that adding certain foods to your diet could potentially help with psoriasis, like probiotics. That got me thinking about yogurt. I’ve always liked yogurt, but now I’m wondering, is yogurt good for psoriasis? A friend of mine mentioned that yogurt might help balance gut health, which could somehow help my skin condition. But honestly, I’m a bit skeptical. Did some research, and I found conflicting info. Some say it’s really helpful, while others say it doesn’t matter. I’ve tried different creams and treatments, but nothing seems to work long-term. I've even done a bit of an elimination diet, cutting out dairy for a bit, but the symptoms flared up again when I added it back in. I guess I just need some advice — is yogurt good for psoriasis? Should I include it daily or just sometimes? Any tips would help – I’m open to trying things at this point! Thx.

Yogurt, particularly those rich in probiotics, holds some potential benefits for psoriasis, especially when considering an Ayurvedic perspective. Psoriasis is primarily related to an imbalance of the Kapha and Vata doshas, where the digestive fire, or Agni, is often compromised, leading to Ama (toxins) formation in the body. Yogurt, with its probiotic content, can aid in improving gut health by supporting digestion and boosting beneficial gut bacteria, which is essential for detoxification and can potentially ease skin inflammation.

However, this can vary greatly depending on your unique constitution or Prakriti and current dosha imbalance, as well as the type and form of yogurt consumed. In Ayurveda, it is advised to consume yogurt when it is well-formed, fresh, and preferably made from A2 milk with cultures. It’s most beneficial when taken during the day, not at night as it can increase Kapha and contribute to Ama accumulation.

That said, those who find dairy aggravating to their symptoms should be cautious. If you notice flare-ups after consuming yogurt or other dairy products, consider switching to plant-based probiotic-rich alternatives like homemade coconut yogurt, which can be lighter and less likely to increase Kapha.

Incorporating spices like turmeric and ginger into your diet can help improve Agni and further combat inflammation. Try making a lassi, a diluted yogurt drink, flavored with a pinch of turmeric and ginger as a midday beverage. Ensure your meals are warm and moist to balance Vata, reducing dryness and itchiness.

For soothing external relief, frequent application of Ayurvedic oils such as neem or coconut oil mixed with a few drops of sandalwood essential oil could be beneficial.

As always, consider consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner to get recommendations tailored to your body type and condition. Identifying dietary triggers and maintaining a balanced lifestyle, aligned with your dosha, is essential for managing psoriasis with Ayurveda effectively.

Including yogurt in your diet could be beneficial, but it’s important to understand that its effects might vary depending on your unique body constitution, or prakriti, and the specific imbalances in your doshas. In Siddha-Ayurvedic terms, psoriasis can often be associated with an imbalance in the kapha and pitta doshas, impacting your skin health. The potential benefit of yogurt largely comes from its probiotic properties, which can support gut health and in turn possibly influence your skin’s condition since gut health is linked to inflammation in the body.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, yogurt is generally considered sour and heavy, which can increase kapha dosha if consumed in excess. So if your psoriasis symptoms are related to kapha excess, you might need to consume it cautiously. However, in moderation, yogurt can aid digestion, help balance agni, and support the propagation of beneficial gut flora, thereby potentially reducing inflammation.

I suggest incorporating yogurt into your diet in a controlled manner. Start by consuming a small portion, like half a cup, preferably in the afternoon when digestion is strong. Choose plain, natural yogurt, possibly with active cultures, and see how your body responds over a week or two. If you observe improvements or neutral effects, you might continue, but if symptoms worsen, it could be a sign that yogurt is not ideal for your current condition.

It’s also feasible to enhance yogurt’s benefits by mixing it with a pinch of turmeric or cumin, which are known to aid digestion and help reduce pitta. Keep monitoring how your skin reacts, and adjust accordingly. Remember, the key is finding the right balance that aligns with your body’s needs and responses. Be sure to seek input from a healthcare provider regularly assess the condition and ensure that this dietary inclusion is beneficial for you.
