what are the benefits of curd - #41690

Ava

I am really curious about what are the benefits of curd because I’ve been having some digestion issues lately. About a month ago, I started feeling bloated all the time and just not right. A friend suggested I try including more curd in my diet since she swears by it for improving gut health. I mean, I've always thought it was just something nice to eat with spicy food, but turns out it might do more? I started eating a bowl of curd daily, but I haven’t really noticed a huge difference yet, at least not like what my friend mentioned. Some days my stomach feels a bit firmer, but then I have nights when I still get discomfort, and it worries me. I’m also unsure if there’s a right way to eat it — like, should I have it plain or mix in some fruit? Also, do I need to consider anything, maybe with my overall diet or my other health issues, to really grasp what are the benefits of curd? Like are there any other foods that work better together with curd? I’m open to any advice or personal experiences. Really hope I can get my digestion back on track!

Curd, or yogurt as it’s often called, is a staple in many diets and known for its digestive benefits. Ayurveda often sees curd as a sattvic food, meaning it brings peace and clarity to the mind and body, especially when consumed correctly. Its benefits are largely due to the presence of live bacteria - probiotics that help to balance gut flora and promote healthy digestion. However, consuming curd requires some mindfulness, as its effects can vary depending on several factors.

For your bloating and discomfort, consuming curd daily might help stabilize your digestive system over time. Yet, some people with lactose intolerance or sensitivity may experience discomfort. If that’s the case, it might be worth exploring if lactose-free yogurts work better for you. Ideally, curd should be consumed in the day as it’s considered to have heating qualities that could cause discomfort if consumed at night.

Eating curd plain can be beneficial, but you can enhance its digestive properties by adding spices like cumin or a pinch of salt. Avoid combining curd with fruits, as this can sometimes aggravate digestive issues – Ayurveda generally advices against mixing sour and sweet tastes.

If you’re seeking best combinations, try incorporating curd with rice, as this mix is often cooling and soothing, making it easier on the stomach. Other additions like cumin, coriander, or mint can enhance digestion and ease discomfort. Like any dietary change, it’s wise to assess how your body responds to curd over a couple of weeks.

Meanwhile, ensure your meals are balanced. Digestive issues can often benefit from a diet rich in whole grains, fiber, and plenty of fluids. Pay attention to any food intolerances, meals taken in a hurry, or stress, as these can compound digestive woes.

If troubles persist, it could be beneficial to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner or gastroenterologist to better understand the underlying issues. Occasionally, more specific interventions might be necessary for long-term relief.
