how to treat grey hair - #42797

Julian

I am really concerned about how to treat grey hair. It all started a few months ago, like one day I just noticed this few grey strands and now they seem to be popping up everywhere! I’m only in my early thirties and I’ve read all these articles saying stress could be a factor or even diet but who really knows right? Honestly, I feel like it just came outta nowhere. I’ve tried some over-the-counter dyes, but they just seem so harsh on my hair. I have this curly hair that tends to get dry anyway, and I'm worried that those chemicals aren’t gonna help in the long run. My friend told me that she found some natural remedies that worked wonders for her mom, but honestly wasn't sure how to treat grey hair without resorting to that stuff. Like what is really out there? Oh, and I’ve tried mixing a few oils like coconut and amla, but haven’t seen any real difference. I dunno if it’s too little too late or what. Do you think there’s a holistic approach that actually helps with how to treat grey hair? Or is this just my genetics showing through? Any advice or herbs you recommend, would really be helpful! Thanks in advance!

In Ayurveda, premature greying of hair is often linked to an imbalance in the Pitta dosha, which governs heat and metabolism in the body. A lifestyle contributing to excess heat—like stress, spicy foods, or insufficient sleep—can exacerbate this condition, leading to greying. Genetics do play a role, but incorporating certain ayurvedic practices can help slow down or potentially reverse the process by balancing the Pitta dosha.

For a holistic approach, begin by examining your diet. Incorporate more cooling and nourishing foods such as sweet fruits (grapes, pomegranates), vegetables like cucumber, and plenty of green leafy greens. Avoid spicy, fermented, or oily foods that can aggravate Pitta. Incorporating amla (Indian gooseberry) into your diet can also be helpful. You might try drinking a small glass of fresh amla juice daily or taking amla powder with water each morning for its proven benefits on hair. Amla is rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants, which help maintain hair health and color.

Stress is a common factor, so engage in stress-reduction techniques like meditation or yoga to keep your mind calm and body balanced. Scheduling regular physical exercises will help regulate body functions, too.

To address the hair directly, try oiling your hair weekly with natural oils. A blend of bhringraj oil—known for its hair strengthening and darkening properties—mixed with coconut oil could support hair health and prevent further greying. Leave this on your hair for at least 30 minutes before washing off, gently massaging your scalp to improve bood circulation and absorption.

Finally, herbs like brahmi and shikakai can be used in hair washes or masks. Make a simple hair pack by mixing them in equal parts with water into a paste, apply on your scalp and hair, and rinse after 15-20 minutes. This can condition your hair and help calm the scorching effect of Pitta dosha.

If after implementing these suggestions you don’t see a positive change in a few months, a consultation with an Ayurvedic physician might be worthwhile to further tailor your approach according to your unique constitution and lifestyle.
