For the last 2–3 days, I’ve been having discomfort on my face. I feel frequent itching and a mild burning sensation, especially in the cheek area. I also noticed a small pimple forming on my cheek. My skin type is oily, and I usually have visible open pores, but this level of irritation is unusual for me. I haven’t changed my skincare products or diet recently, and I’m not aware of anything that may have triggered this. I would like to understand what might be causing these symptoms and whether it could be a reaction, an infection, or early signs of acne flare-up.”

The facial discomfort you’re experiencing — itching, mild burning, and developing pimple could be indications of a Pitta imbalance in Ayurveda. Pitta dosha, which governs heat and transformation in body, when aggravated can manifest as skin irritations like burning and redness. Since your skin is naturally oily with open pores, it is more prone to Pitta related symptoms.

Several factors might contribute to this, such as stress, even weather changes, or the accumilation of heat in the body. Even unchanged skincare products could cause reactions if there’s a sensitive period. Now, let’s look at some practical steps you can take:

1. Cooling masks: Apply a sandalwood paste or rose water which can help soothe the skin. Simply mix sandalwood powder with rose water into a paste and apply to the affected area.

2. Dietary adjustments: Incorporate more cooling foods into your diet such as cucumber, watermelon, and leafy greens. Avoid spicy, fermented, or hot-temperature foods as they can further aggravate Pitta.

3. Topicals: Instead of heavy creams or ointments, use light aloe vera gel directly on affected area—it’s known for its soothing and cooling properties. Avoid excessive use of harsh face washes, cleansers and instead opt for natural cleansers like besan (gram flour).

4. Hydration: Ensure you drink ample water throughout the day as hydration is key in managing pitta imbalances. Herbal teas made with mint or coriander can also help cool down internal heat.

5. Stress management: Practices such as yoga, gentle breathing exercises or meditation can help to balance stress levels which in turn can reduce skin irritation.
