Doctors' responses

The sensation of liquid moving, accompanied by pressure in your head, neck, and sinus areas—with the sense of fluid moving up and down the throat—may be linked to a condition known as post-nasal drip. This is consistent with accumulation and movement of excess Kapha dosha. During menopause, the balance of dosha can be further disrupted, often increasing Kapha and Vata doshas.

In Ayurveda, phlegm and mucus are associated with Kapha, so there’s an increased likelihood of them experiencing congestion during these times. It’s also possible that Vata imbalance is influencing this condition, due to its dry quality that could explain sensations in your head and throat.

In terms of actionable steps, consider dietary modifications to pacify Kapha and Vata. Reduce intake of dairy-like milk and cheese and limit cold and oily foodstuffs. Opt for warm, cooked meals that include spices such as ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, and black pepper to support agni (digestive fire) and reduce Kapha accumulation.

Enhancing your routine with steam inhalation—using warm water with a few drops of eucalyptus oil—morning and evening can help relieve sinus pressure and improve drainage. This practice offers further support to the goal of liquefying and eliminating excess Kapha.

Yoga or exercises that focus on neck movement could further enhance the flow in the neck and head region, including practices like Pranayama. Nasya (nasal oil application) with Anu Taila or a similar oil may also help maintain clear nasal pathways.

However, if symptoms persist or become severe, medical evaluation, particularly considering other menopausal symptoms, is vital. Monitoring changes over time ensures that if the condition requires more comprehensive intervention, it can be addressed promptly.
