can i use besan face pack daily - #43718
I am really curious about using a besan face pack daily! I have really oily skin, like, super oily and I’ve been trying all sorts of things to control it. The other day, I read that besan can help, and honestly, I’ve been using a besan face pack for the last week. At first, it felt great, like nourished and refreshed, but I’m not really sure if I should use it every day. During this week, I also started noticing some breakouts, maybe it’s from the pack or just my skin reacting to something else? Who knows! I also think that sometimes, my skin might be too sensitive for stuff like this. But, my friend swears by it and says her skin's so much clearer since she started, and I want that too! Can I use besan face pack daily, or is it too much? Have any of you dealt with similar issues? Should I only use it a couple times a week instead? I really want to avoid making things worse, but don’t want to miss out on the benefits. Any advice would be a lifesaver! Thanks!

Doctors' responses
Using a besan (gram flour) face pack daily might seem tempting, especially when aiming to control oily skin, however, it is essential to consider both your skin type and Ayurveda guidelines.
Besan is traditionally known for its oil-absorbing properties, making it beneficial for oily skin by helping to reduce excess oil and blemishes. Yet, applying it every day may not be suitable for everyone, particularly if you have sensitive skin or notice breakouts. Daily usage can sometimes strip too much natural oils, potentially causing irritation or prompting the skin to produce even more oil in response.
Given your experience of starting to see breakouts, it’s possible your skin needs time to adjust, or it might be reacting to overuse. It might be wise to reduce the frequency to about 2 to 3 times a week. This should provide a balance between gaining benefits of besan and avoiding excessive dryness or irritation.
In terms of Ayurvedic principles, it’s crucial to maintain a balance in your skincare routine, focusing on moderation. Pitta dosha, often linked with oily and sensitive skin, is aggravated by over-cleansing. Adding ingredients like a pinch of turmeric or rose water with the besan to make your pack can pacify Pitta, and soothe skin.
Additionally, pay close attention to your skincare routine—ensure you are using a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer afterwards to keep your skin hydrated without adding extra oil. Keeping your lifestyle and diet in mind is crucial too, as eating oily, spicy, or heavy foods can exacerbate oiliness according to Ayurveda.
If breakout persist or worsen, you might want to consult a dermatologist, just to rule out any possible allergies or underlying skin conditions. It’s important to tailor your regimen to your unique skin needs, always observing how it reacts to different treatments.
Using a besan, or gram flour, face pack daily isn’t necessarily appropriate for everyone, especially if you have sensitive skin, like what you mentioned. Besan is known for its ability to absorb excess oil, making it beneficial for oily skin types in balancing out the excess sebum. However, using it every day might cause your skin to dry out or even irritate if your skin’s barrier is delicate. This can lead to the breakouts you’ve started experiencing.
In the context of Siddha-Ayurvedic principles, oily skin often correlates with an imbalance in the kapha dosha, sometimes compounded by pitta imbalances if there’s acne. To address this, you might want to try using the face pack 2-3 times a week instead of daily. This frequency is generally gentler for most skin types and allows your skin to benefit from the oil-absorbing properties of besan without overwhelming it.
For application, blend besan with a bit of water or rose water for a simple mask. If your skin tolerates it well, you can incorporate a pinch of turmeric, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, but do a patch test first. Apply the pack and leave it on for about 10-15 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.
Aside from external applications, managing oily skin can also be approached internally. Focus on a diet that helps balance your doshas – including plenty of fresh vegetables, whole grains, and avoiding heavy, oily, or excessively spicy foods that may exacerbate the conditions.
If breakouts persist or you notice increased sensitivity or other adverse reactions, it’s wise to consult a dermatologist or a Siddha-Ayurvedic practitioner who can provide guidance tailored to your specific skin constitution.
