does ashwagandha cause hair loss - #43756

Julian

I am really confused right now about this whole ashwagandha thing. I started taking it a few months ago to help with my stress and anxiety levels, and while I think it actually did help a bit at first, I’m noticing my hair is falling out more than usual. Like, to the point where I’m actually worried!! I read online something about "does ashwagandha cause hair loss?" and it got me freaked out. I mean, I didn't even touch my hair for a week and I could see strands everywhere, on my pillow, in the shower... ugh. I also have this whole hormonal issue going on — PCOS, you know? I thought ashwagandha would be good for balancing things out, but now I just don't know. Maybe it’s not the ashwagandha or maybe it is? Doctors told me it might just be my hormones making my hair thin, but then a friend mentioned that ashwagandha could also be a culprit. Should I stop taking it altogether? Or is there a chance there are other factors at play here? Any advice on does ashwagandha cause hair loss or is it just my imagination is what I’m really looking for!

Doctors' responses

Ashwagandha, or Withania somnifera, has a long-standing reputation in Ayurveda as a potent adaptogen, beneficial for stress and hormonal balances. It’s generally not known for causing hair loss; in fact, its adaptogenic properties often contribute to improved hair health by reducing stress-induced hair loss. But everyone’s unique and individual response to herbs can vary, which makes things a bit tricky sometimes.

Given your situation, where PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) plays a role, the hormonal imbalances associated with this condition could indeed contribute to hair loss. PCOS is often characterized by elevated levels of androgens, which can lead to thinning hair. The stress from worrying about this can also exacerbate hair fall. Taking ashwagandha might help mitigate some stress, possibly aiding hair health indirectly by reducing cortisol levels, which are known to impact hair growth. Still, the harmonics of multiple factors, including diet, lifestyle, and hormonal balance, could interplay in your case.

Before deciding to stop ashwagandha completely, consider trying a more holistic approach. Ensure your diet includes plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids, rich in anti-inflammatory properties, and consume enough protein; both of which support hair health. Foods like flaxseeds, walnuts, and fish can be helpful. Also, nourishing your hair with ayurvedic oils like bhringraj oil or amla oil might provide external support to hair follicles.

Improving Agni (digestive fire) by avoiding excessively cold or heavy-to-digest foods can also help in maintaining balance. Stay hydrated but avoid excessive caffeine which can agitate Vata and disrupt balance further.

You may also want to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner who can provide tailored advice considering your constitution (prakriti) and specific health challenges. They could recommend alternative herbs or practices more suitable for your specific doshic imbalances. Additionally, consulting with your healthcare provider before making any changes to ensure that interactions between ashwagandha and your health conditions are well monitored. And remember, everyone’s physiology is different — what works for one may not be ideal for another, so personal observation is key.

Ashwagandha is largely praised in Ayurveda for balancing the nervous system and aiding stress resilience, but it’s generally not known to cause hair loss. In fact, it’s often used to support hair health due to its nurturing effects on the body’s doshas. Your observation of hair loss could more likely be related to your PCOS, which is known to lead hormonal fluctuations causing hair thinning. Stress and hormonal imbalances are often at play with hair issues, and they might be influencing your current situation.

While it’s crucial to understand individual responses to herbs can vary, abrupt stopping wouldn’t tackle the underlying issue directly. Consider assessing your body’s overall state, including your dosha balance and digestive fire (agni), as imbalances there could exacerbate abnormal hair fall. It’s essential to maintain a wholesome diet, rich in nutrients that support the sapta dhatus, especially the hair-supportive rasa and rakta dhatus. Foods rich in iron, B vitamins, and healthy fats can nourish your tissues and promote hair vitality.

For the time being, you may want to pause ashwagandha to see if there’s any noticeable change in your symptoms, but also keep an eye on your lifestyle factors like diet, stress, and sleep, which directly influence your vata and pitta doshas, commonly affected in PCOS. Practicing mindfulness, yoga, and mild exercises can help balance these. If the hair fall persists despite adjustments, it would be a good idea to consult a healthcare provider experienced in both Ayurvedic and conventional treatments for a more integrated approach.
