Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) is a complex, chronic skin condition, and the concept of a complete “cure” can be elusive, but Ayurveda offers ways to manage it effectively. From an Ayurvedic perspective, HS is often associated with imbalances in the Pitta and Kapha doshas. The condition may also involve a buildup of ama (toxins) in the body due to impaired Agni (digestive fire). While HS may not be permanently “curable,” consistent Ayurvedic management can significantly reduce symptoms and prevent flare-ups.

Long-term medication isn’t always necessary. Treatment usually begins with internal cleansing (shodhana) to eliminate toxins. This may involve Panchakarma therapies like Virechana (therapeutic purgation) or Raktamoksha (bloodletting) as needed. After cleansing, Rasayanas (rejuvenatives) and specific herbs, such as Manjishtha or Neem, may be administered to balance doshas and support skin health. The duration of these medications depends on individual response and severity of the condition, but ongoing medication isn’t always mandatory. Patients should periodically consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to adjust their treatment plan.

Regarding diet, non-vegetarian foods aren’t strictly prohibited in Ayurveda, but for HS, certain modifications are beneficial. Opt for a predominantly satvic diet, reducing spicy, sour, and fried foods which aggravate Pitta. Lean meats in moderation are acceptable if they are not heavily spiced or processed. Regular consumption of fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lentils supports overall health.
