Since your husband had spinal AVF surgery and the MRI still shows persistent swelling after 3.5 months, I would strongly advise following the neurosurgeon’s recommendation for the DSA. It is important to confirm that the AVF has been completely treated and that there is no residual or recurrent abnormal blood flow. The fact that he is walking better is encouraging, but ongoing swelling with numbness/tingling means recovery is still incomplete. Continue physiotherapy and avoid overexertion. Ensure adequate nutrition, hydration, and rest. Ashwagandha capsule – 1 capsule twice daily after food Yograj Guggulu – 1 tablet twice daily after food Ksheerabala 101 capsule – 1 capsule twice daily Ayurveda may support nerve recovery and strength, but DSA should not be delayed, as it will provide important information about the cause of the persistent swelling. ••I understand how stressful and concerning it must be to see “persistent swelling” on an MRI 3.5 months after your husband’s spine surgery, especially when you are watching him put so much effort into walking and recovering day by day. •• Because the spinal cord is a highly sensitive area, Ayurvedic management at this stage must be gentle, systemic, and strictly non-invasive. 1. Gentle Herbal Support (Internal) To address the persistent swelling and help support nerve healing, classical Ayurvedic formulations focus on reducing inflammation and improving micro-circulation: ••Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa): Literally meaning “that which renews the body,” Punarnava is Ayurveda’s premier herb for systemic swelling and fluid retention. It helps the body naturally clear excess fluid from deep tissues. Shallaki (Boswellia serrata): A potent, natural anti-inflammatory herb that supports joint and tissue healing without irritating the digestive tract. ••Guggulu Formulations: Specific preparations like Punarnavadi Guggulu or Kanchanar Guggulu are traditionally used to clear blockages (lekhana action) and reduce localized deep-tissue swelling. 2. External Therapies (To Be Done with Extreme Caution) Because he had spine surgery just 4 months ago, traditional heavy Ayurvedic massages (Abhyanga) or heavy downward pressure on the back are strictly forbidden until the spine is completely healed and the DSA is clear. ••What is safe: Very gentle application of warm Sahacharadi Thailam or Ksheerabala Thailam on his legs and lower extremities (not the surgical site) can help soothe the nerve pathways and improve his walking speed over time.
