Namaste. ----At 77 years of age, the gradual increase in floaters or a film-like appearance in the vision is commonly due to age-related changes in the vitreous gel of the eye. While mild floaters are often harmless, a progressive increase in floaters should not be ignored. -----My advice is as follows: 1. First, undergo a detailed eye examination, including a dilated retinal evaluation by an ophthalmologist, to rule out retinal tears, retinal detachment, macular disorders, or other eye diseases. 2. If you notice sudden onset of numerous floaters, flashes of light, a curtain-like shadow, or sudden decrease in vision, seek immediate medical attention. 3. From an Ayurvedic perspective, supportive measures for maintaining eye health may include: • mahatriphala Ghrita – 1 teaspoon at bedtime with warm milk, if suitable. • Saptamrita Lauha – 1 tablet twice daily after food under Ayurvedic supervision. • Regular intake of green leafy vegetables, fruits, and adequate water. 4. Maintain good control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and other systemic conditions, as these can affect eye health. 5. Please understand that there is currently no medicine, Ayurvedic or modern, that has been scientifically proven to completely remove vitreous floaters. Treatment is mainly supportive unless a specific eye disease is identified. —In summary, I recommend a retinal examination first, especially since the floaters are increasing. Ayurvedic medicines may help support overall eye health, but proper evaluation is important to rule out any serious retinal condition.

At 77 years of age, increasing eye floaters and a sensation of a “film” over the eyes should be evaluated carefully by an eye specialist. While Ayurveda can help support eye health and slow age-related degeneration, sudden increases in floaters, flashes of light, a curtain-like shadow, or rapid vision loss require urgent ophthalmic assessment to rule out retinal problems. From an Ayurvedic perspective, this condition is commonly associated with Vata aggravation, age-related tissue depletion (Dhatu Kshaya), and weakening of the visual apparatus (Drishti Mandala). Aging naturally increases Vata dosha, which may manifest as dryness, degeneration, and visual disturbances. Ayurvedic Approach 1. Internal Medicines The following classical formulations are commonly used to support eye health: Saptamrit Lauh – 1-2 tablets twice daily after meals. Triphala Ghrita – ½ to 1 teaspoon with warm milk at bedtime. Mahatriphala Ghrita – may be considered when visual weakness is prominent. Amalaki Rasayana – supports eye nourishment and healthy aging. Yashtimadhu (Licorice) preparations may help nourish ocular tissues in suitable individuals. The exact medicine and dosage should be selected after assessing digestion, constitution (Prakriti), blood sugar status, and other medical conditions. 2. Netra Poshana (Eye Nourishment) Triphala Eye Wash Soak 1 teaspoon Triphala powder overnight in a glass of water. In the morning, filter very carefully through a clean cloth until no particles remain. Use only the clear filtrate to gently wash closed eyes. Stop if irritation occurs and maintain strict hygiene. Ghee for Eye Health Regular intake of small amounts of: Cow’s ghee Triphala Ghrita helps counteract Vata dryness and supports ocular nourishment. 3. Diet Recommendations Prefer: Amla (Indian gooseberry) Cow’s ghee Soaked almonds Black raisins Green leafy vegetables Carrots Pumpkin Seasonal fruits Adequate hydration Reduce: Excessively dry foods Packaged snacks Excess tea and coffee Late-night meals Smoking and alcohol (if applicable) 4. Lifestyle Measures Sleep 7-8 hours regularly. Avoid prolonged screen exposure. Protect eyes from excessive sunlight and wind. Practice gentle blinking exercises. Take frequent visual breaks during reading. 5. Panchakarma Therapies Netra Tarpana – medicated ghee retention therapy around the eyes. Nasya with suitable medicated oils. Shirodhara for Vata-predominant aging conditions. Rasayana therapy for long-term rejuvenation. These therapies aim to nourish ocular tissues and support visual comfort but cannot guarantee removal of established vitreous floaters.

••Welcome to a holistic perspective on vision care. In Ayurveda, the eye is considered the seat of Alochaka Pitta (the metabolic fire governing vision), but its structures and functions are heavily sustained by Tarpaka Kapha (nourishing fluids) and controlled by Prana Vayu (movement and nervous function). ••Here is a comprehensive, time-tested Ayurvedic approach aimed at nourishing the optic tissues, reducing dryness, and checking further degeneration. 1. Classical Ayurvedic Internal Formulations To treat the root cause, we must pacify Vata and rejuvenate the eye tissues (Chakshushya therapy). ••Saptamrit Lauh: This is a classic herbo-mineral formulation widely used for degenerative eye disorders. It combines Triphala, Yashtimadhu (Licorice), and purified iron. It acts as a powerful rejuvenation therapy for the optic nerve and retina. ••Triphala Ghrita: Medicated cow’s ghee infused with Triphala. Ghee has a unique ability to cross the blood-retinal barrier and nourish the deeper structures of the eye, directly targeting Vata dryness. ••Amalaki Rasayana: High in natural antioxidants, regular intake of Amalaki (Indian Gooseberry) helps clear metabolic waste from the microcapillaries of the eyes. 2. External Therapies & Local Care Local treatments in Ayurveda (Netra Kriyakalpa) are highly specific for structural eye issues. ••Netra Tarpana (Highly Recommended): This is a specialized clinical procedure where a well of black gram dough is built around the eyes, and warm, medicated Triphala Ghrita is pooled inside. You are asked to open and close your eyes underwater. At 77, this is arguably the best therapy to intensely lubricate the vitreous humor and alleviate the root cause of floaters. ••Triphala Eye Wash (Home Care): Soak one teaspoon of pure Triphala powder in a glass of water overnight. Strain it thoroughly through a fine muslin cloth multiple times in the morning (ensuring absolutely no particle remains) and gently rinse your eyes with it. It helps clear the superficial “film” sensation. 3. Dietary and Lifestyle Corrections ••Snigdha Ahara (Nourishing Diet): Ensure your diet includes healthy fats. Incorporate a teaspoon of pure A2 cow’s ghee in your daily meals. Eat warm, freshly cooked foods, and avoid overly dry, crunchy, or stale foods which aggravate Vata. ••Palming and Rest: Rub your palms together until they feel warm, then gently place them over your closed eyes without pressing. Breathe deeply for 2 minutes. This relaxes the ciliary muscles and balances Alochaka Pitta. ••Protect from Strain: Limit exposure to harsh digital screens, strong winds, and bright midday sun, which can deplete eye moisture rapidly.
