can we eat kadhi at night - #40163

I am really confused about this whole eating kadhi thing at night. Last week, I went to a friend's house, and she made this delicious kadhi with pakoras, and I found myself wondering if it’s even a good idea to eat kadhi at night. Like, I usually thought stuff like that should be avoided after sunset, right? But then I hear different opinions! My digestive system has been acting a bit weird lately too. Sometimes bloating or just feeling heavy after I eat certain things. I don’t know if it’s just all in my head or what. I mean, kadhi is made from yogurt and all, which is good for the tummy, but does that change if you're eating it at night? I read somewhere that dairy can be hard to digest after dark. But ugh, I can’t deny how comforting kadhi at night felt — especially with some hot rice! I feel like eating it after 7 PM might not be a great choice but yet it tasted so good! Is there like a proper ayurvedic viewpoint on can we eat kadhi at night? Should I ditch it for dinner or can I still enjoy it without consequences? I’m kinda lost here. Hope you all can help!

Eating kadhi at night can indeed be a contentious topic, especially when considering Ayurvedic principles. Kadhi, made with yogurt and gram flour (besan), has a unique blend of properties. In Ayurveda, yogurt, or curd, is often considered heavy and sticky (guru and abhishyandi) to digest, particularly at night when digestive fire (agni) is typically lower. This can potentially lead to issues like bloating, heaviness, or ama (toxins) accumulation if consumed inappropriately.

However, kadhi not just yogurt. The spices used - like cumin, turmeric, and asafoetida - actually help in digestion. The sour nature of kadhi from fermented yogurt has ushan virya, or heating effect, which can stimulate your digestive fire. This makes it somewhat easier to digest compared to consuming plain yogurt.

For your digestive concerns and bloating issues, it’s essential to pay attention to your agni. If your digestive system is sensitive, consuming kadhi at night might aggravate symptoms. To enjoy kadhi more safely in the evening, try these tips:

1. Opt for lighter versions of kadhi, avoiding pakoras or rich tadkas which add heaviness. 2. Consume in moderation, paired with easily digestible basmati rice. 3. Ensure kadhi is warm when served; cold foods are generally harder to digest at night. 4. Inclusion of spices such as ginger, cumin, and coriander can aid digestion further.

If digestive issues persist or worsen, it might be beneficial to limit or avoid kadhi in the evening and focus on lighter, easily digestible foods for dinner, like moong dal khichri or soups. It’s important to listen to your body. Experiment by progressively adjusting how your body reacts and consult a healthcare professional if needed. Balancing pleasure with health is key.

Kadhi, a dish made from yogurt and gram flour, indeed can be a tricky meal to consume at night according to traditional Siddha-Ayurvedic principles. It’s a combination that plays an intricate role in your digestive cycle. In the evening, our agni, or digestive fire, tends to be weaker than during the day. This reduced digestive capacity means that food can take longer to digest, leading potentially to digestive issues like bloating which you’ve mentioned.

Yogurt, a key ingredient in kadhi, is considered heavy and, being a dairy product, it’s best consumed during the day when pitta energy, which supports digestion, is stronger. Eating dairy at night can sometimes lead to mucus buildup or heaviness, potentially disturbing your vata and kapha balance. This may be why you’ve experienced some digestive discomfort.

To harmonize this within your lifestyle, if you enjoy kadhi for dinner, you must ensure your digestive system can handle it. Consider having a light, easily digestible version of kadhi. Use minimal oil for pakoras and avoid deep-frying. Including digestive herbs like ginger or cumin in the kadhi can further help ignite your agni and aid digestion at night.

For those with a kapha dominance or particularly sensitive digestion, it might be best to skip kadhi in the evening. Instead, Sanskrit texts suggest sipping warm water infused with a small piece of ginger before meals to help with digestion. However, if your digestive system is more balanced, small portions of kadhi can be consumed, mindfully monitoring how your body responds afterward.

If bloating persists, it might be worth exploring fasting till the symptoms ease or integrating a diet that pacifies your specific doshas’ needs. Always observe how your body reacts and adjust your dietary choices accordingly. For any lingering issues, consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner could provide personalized insights and solutions.
