can we eat onion with curd - #40263

I am super confused about something and hope you guys can help me out! last week, I went out for dinner with my family, and I ordered this yummy curry that had onions in it, and then I was served some raita (you know, that curd thing) on the side. I always thought onions and curd don't really go together? Like, is it a thing? I mean, can we eat onion with curd?? I tried to ask the waiter, but he just looked at me funny and didn't really answer! A little background, I have a delicate stomach, and I've noticed if I mix certain foods together, things can go bad. Like, just last month, I had a bit of a stomachache after eating curd with something spicy. I did read somewhere online that certain food combinations aren't great, but I just can't find a clear answer on onions and curd. Am I overthinking this? Or is there some wisdom in Ayurveda about this combo? I love cooking and experimenting in the kitchen, but I def don't want to make myself sick! Have any of you tried this? Can we eat onion with curd safely, or should I just stick to one or the other when I’m having a meal? Would really appreciate your thoughts!

According to Ayurveda, the consideration of food combinations, known as Viruddha Ahara, is crucial to maintaining digestive wellness. Onions and curd are traditionally seen as foods that may not pair well together due to their differing properties. Onions are said to be pungent and heating, which can stimulate agni (digestive fire), while curd is known for its heavy and cooling qualities. This conflicting nature might potentially create an imbalance, especially for those with a sensitive digestion like yours.

Since you mentioned having a delicate stomach, and noticing discomfort with certain combinations, it would be prudent to be cautious. In the context of Ayurveda, combining foods with opposing attributes can yield digestive challenges, such as formation of ama (toxins) due to impaired digestion.

If you’re inclined towards experimentation in the kitchen, but want to avoid discomfort, consider moderating the quantities when trying out combinations. Start with small portion of curd and add a minimal amount of onion to observe how your body reacts. Alternatively, you might choose to enhance the curd with compatible ingredients such as cumin, coriander, or mint, which are more aligned in taste and effect.

Despite these general guidelines, individual tolerance varies widely. Listen closely to your body’s response. Pay attention to any signs of indigestion, bloating, or discomfort following meals. Maintaining balance through mindful eating practices is important to support your sensitive digestion.

For consistent digestive issues, addressing the root cause through methods such as including more digestible spices, ensuring meals are well-cooked, and practicing regular meal timings can also be beneficial. Should there persist ongoing discomfort, consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner would provide personalized guidance tailored to your constitution.

In Ayurvedic wisdom, food combinations, or samskaras, play a crucial role in maintaining balance within the body. Regarding onions and curd, this combination is traditionally viewed with caution. Onions are considered to have a heating quality and are rajasic in nature, meaning they can elevate energy and stimulation. Curd, on the other hand, is recognized for its cooling properties but has a heavy, sour quality, categorizing it as tamasik, which can promote sluggishness if not digested properly. When combined, the contrasting energies of onions and curd might challenge digestive fire, known as agni.

Given your delicate stomach and previous discomfort, it would be wise to observe moderation. Mixing foods that are opposite in temperature, taste, energy, or post-digestive effects can confuse your agni and potentially lead to digestive disturbances such as bloating or gastritis.

Here’s a practical approach: If you enjoy curd and onions, try consuming them at different times, not in the same sitting. Let your meal featuring onions be followed by taking curd after a couple of hours or vice versa. This helps maintain a balanced agni, ensuring optimal digestion and nutrient absorption. Additionally, if you wish to create a balance for yourself, opt for cooling herbs and spices like coriander or cumin when preparing a dish with onions.

If you experience discomfort regularly, consider a gentle digestive aid. You might try settling your stomach with a traditional remedy like ginger tea or a pinch of rock salt with warm water, which can help soothe and strengthen your agni.

Ultimately, listen to your body’s responses. Personal constitution (prakriti), lifestyle, and current health condition significantly influence how you experience food and its combinations. If issues persist, it might be worth consulting a practitioner to explore your unique dosha imbalances and tailor recommendations to your needs.
