is lassi cold or hot for body - #41348

I am really confused about something that might sound silly, but I've heard different things about lassi and how it affects the body. Last week, I went to this awesome Indian restaurant, and I ordered a mango lassi because I was super thirsty after my spicy meal. It was so refreshing and tasted great, but my friend said that lassi can be "cold" for the body. I thought cold meant like icy, you know? But then I started thinking, is lassi cold or hot for body? I mean, I see people enjoying it in all seasons, and I thought it could be cooling after the hot spices we just had. I've also read online that certain foods can have warming or cooling effects, and now I'm all mixed up. Is lassi cold or hot for body? Does it really cool me down, or can it have some warming qualities too? I've always loved it after a heavy meal, but I just don’t want to mess with my digestion or anything like that. If I drink lassi on a cool day, should I be concerned about it? Or should I just enjoy it and not think too much? Help me out, guys!

Lassi is typically considered “cooling” for the body according to Ayurveda. When we talk about foods being “hot” or “cold” in Ayurvedic terms, we’re looking at their energetic effects on your body’s balance rather than the actual temperature of the food. Lassi, made from yogurt and often diluted with water or milk, is known for its soothing and cooling properties, which makes it a good choice after a spicy meal. It helps in balancing the heat (known as “pitta”) generated by spicy foods.

In Ayurveda, yogurt is a cooling food, and when blended into lassi, it retains this quality. The digestive spices like cardamom or cumin often added to lassi also help in improving agni, the digestive fire, without creating excess heat, making it a balanced option for aiding digestion. This is why many enjoy lassi as a refreshing drink particularly in hotter climates or after a meal with intense spices.

You don’t have to be overly concernd about drinking lassi on a cooler day. However, if you have a dominant kapha dosha, you might want to consume it in moderation, as cold-natured foods can increase kapha, which could lead to feelings of heaviness or lethargy. That said, normal consumption, especially in the context of a regular diet, shouldn’t be a problem.

Lassi is best consumed during the day and it’s generally not recommended in excess during late evenings or nights, as excess cold intake might slow digestion during those times. If you’re feeling particularly vata-type symptoms like gassiness or bloating, a spiced lassi might be more soothing.

If you enjoy lassi, feel free to enjoy it without worry. Listening to your body’s signals is key, and as always, balance is important. If you experience any discomfort after drinking it, consider assessing the ingredients or maybe adjusting how often you have it.

Lassi is considered “cooling” for the body in the context of Ayurveda, which might explain your friend’s remark. It’s not about the temperature, like being “icy,” but rather its effect on your body’s internal energy balance. Lassi, made from yogurt, has a natural cooling effect due to its qualities, which can help soothe excess pitta dosha. Pitta is associated with heat, so that’s why lassi feels refreshing after a spicy or heavy meal, especially in hot weather.

Yogurt itself is considered to have a cooling virya (energy), making it helpful for calming inflammation, heat-related disorders, or when you’re feeling agitated. If you enjoy lassi after a meal, it aids in digestion, but ensure it’s not too heavy or thick—dilution with water makes it lighter and easier to digest. Adding spices like cardamom or a pinch of cumin can also balance its cooling nature, making it more suited to different seasons or body types, especially if you have a tendency towards kapha or vata imbalance.

On cool days, or if your constitution is naturally more kapha or prone to respiratory issues, you might want to consume lassi in moderation, with warming spices. Opt for a thinner consistency during these times. Drinking lassi in the morning can be more beneficial for digestive fire, rather than later in the evening when it’s cooler. Remember to listen to your body and enjoy it when it feels right for you. If consumed too much, or inappropriately for your body type or season, it could lead to imbalance. Always adapt to how your body responds.
