Hello, Ayurveda approaches mental health through the concept of Manas Dosha, where stress and anxiety are typically seen as an imbalance of Vata (the energy of movement) and Rajas (the quality of passion/activity). When Vata accumulates in the nervous system, it leads to restlessness, worry, and sleep disturbances. Ayurveda focuses on “grounding” the nervous system. Treatment involves Medhya Rasayanas (nootropic herbs) that nourish the brain tissue and stabilize the mind. For a 45-year-old woman, this approach often also considers hormonal fluctuations that can exacerbate emotional symptoms. Prescription : 1. Manasamitra Vatakam: This is a premier formulation for mental peace and coordination. It is widely used for anxiety and stress-induced insomnia. Dose: 1 tablet twice daily after food, preferably with warm milk or as directed by a physician. 2. Kalyanaka Ghritam: A medicated ghee that helps balance the mind and supports emotional stability. Dose: 1 teaspoon (5-10 grams) on an empty stomach in the morning with warm water. 3. Saraswatarishta: A fermented liquid preparation that improves memory and relieves mental fatigue. Dose: 15-20 ml twice daily after food with an equal amount of water. Generally, Ayurvedic medicines are considered safe when taken under supervision. However: Heavy Metals: Ensure products are from reputable brands (like Kerala Ayurveda) that test for heavy metal safety. Medicated ghees or strong herbs may cause mild digestive changes or nausea if the dose is too high. Some herbs can interact with conventional medications (like blood thinners or anti-depressants).

Yes Ayurveda can help in managing stress and anxiety and it works by calming the mind and strengthening the nervous system rather than just suppressing symptoms In your case since it has been there for months it is usually related to vata imbalance along with mental fatigue disturbed sleep overthinking or inner restlessness so the treatment is aimed at stabilising vata improving sleep and nourishing the mind Ksheerabala capsule one capsule twice daily after food helps in calming vata and improving sleep and if sleep is very disturbed then saraswatarishta 10 to 15 ml with equal water after dinner can be added Along with medicines daily routine plays a very important role take meals on time avoid late night mobile use reduce tea and coffee include warm oil massage to scalp or feet before sleep and practise simple breathing like anulom vilom for few minutes daily Regarding safety Ayurvedic medicines when selected properly according to your body type and taken in correct dose are generally safe side effects are usually seen only when medicines are taken without proper guidance or in wrong dose so it is always better to take them under supervision With regular use and proper routine you should start noticing improvement in sleep calmness and overall mental balance over a few weeks

Reply by Dr. Sumit Doraya (Ayurveda Physician) Dear Madam, Thank you for presenting your concerns in a clear and structured manner. Based on the information provided—moderate stress and anxiety persisting for 3–6 months, associated digestive disturbances, and occasional sleep disruption—Ayurveda can offer meaningful support in your management. From an Ayurvedic perspective, your symptoms suggest an imbalance of Vata Dosha, particularly affecting the mind and digestive system. Emotional stressors, especially those related to personal relationships, tend to aggravate this imbalance, leading to restlessness, disturbed digestion, and irregular sleep patterns. Ayurveda aims to address such conditions through a holistic approach by stabilizing the nervous system, improving digestive function, enhancing sleep quality, and strengthening mental resilience. As you are currently on prescription medication, it is advisable to follow an integrative approach and avoid any abrupt changes without proper supervision. For management, certain Ayurvedic herbs and classical formulations may be beneficial. These include Ashwagandha, known for its adaptogenic and stress-reducing properties, and Brahmi, which supports mental calmness and cognitive balance. Classical preparations such as Brahmi Vati may also be considered in appropriate cases. From the SN Herbals range, Ashwagandha Capsules and Brahmi Capsules may be used in suitable doses, typically after meals, depending on individual tolerance and ongoing medications. For associated digestive disturbances, mild formulations such as Avipattikar Churna may be considered if indicated. Alongside medication, adherence to a regulated daily routine is essential. Regular meal timings, consumption of warm and freshly prepared food, and avoidance of late-night eating are advised. Simple breathing practices such as Anulom Vilom and Bhramari Pranayama, performed daily, can significantly aid in calming the mind. At bedtime, intake of warm milk with a small quantity of ghee may be helpful, provided digestion permits. Reducing screen exposure before sleep is also recommended. Ayurvedic medicines are generally safe when prescribed appropriately, in correct dosage, and sourced from reliable manufacturers. However, self-medication should be avoided, particularly in your case, as herb–drug interactions may occur with concurrent prescription therapy. With consistent and supervised management, initial improvements in digestion and mental calmness are usually observed within 2–3 weeks, followed by better sleep and reduced anxiety over 4–6 weeks. More sustained improvement may be expected over a period of 2–3 months. In your case, a carefully planned integrative approach would be most appropriate. You may consider sharing details of your current medications and digestive pattern for a more individualized treatment plan. Wishing you good health and well-being. Warm regards, Dr. Sumit Doraya Ayurveda Consultant

In Ayurveda, chronic stress and anxiety are often linked to an imbalance of Vata Dosha, which governs the nervous system. When Vata is aggravated, it can lead to restlessness, sleep disruption, and “digestive fire” issues (Agni), which explains the physical symptoms often felt in the gut. I have prescribed medications for your condition take them consistently , it can take some time because ayurveda works slowly as it acts on roots cause of your problem . Dos✅ • Warm, Cooked Foods: Since you are experiencing digestive issues, favor warm, soupy, and easy-to-digest meals (like Moong Dal Khichdi). Avoid cold or raw foods which further aggravate Vata. •(Self-Massage): Applying warm sesame oil to the scalp and soles of the feet before bed can significantly improve sleep quality. • Maintain a consistent time for meals and sleep to ground the nervous system. • Pranayama: Practice Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing) for 10 minutes daily to calm the mind. Don’ts❌ •Limit caffeine (coffee/tea) and white sugar, as these trigger “spikes” in anxiety. •Skipping meals can lead to gas and bloating, which physically mirrors the feeling of anxiety. •Avoid high-intensity workouts when feeling mentally drained; opt for gentle Yoga instead.

Yes, Ayurveda can help in managing stress and anxiety, especially by calming the nervous system and improving overall balance. It works gradually and focuses on both mind and body. Since you also have digestive issues and disturbed sleep, treatment should be gentle and supportive, not very strong. Keep your routine simple and regular. Avoid long gaps between meals. Reduce tea/coffee and very spicy food. Try to include some quiet time daily, like slow breathing or short walks. Proper sleep timing is important. At home, you can take warm milk at night and do gentle oil massage on feet before sleep. This helps in calming the mind. Ashwagandha tablet – 1 tablet at bedtime Brahmi vati – 1 tablet twice daily Shankhpushpi syrup – 1–2 teaspoons at night These help reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and support mental calmness. Regarding side effects, Ayurvedic medicines are generally safe when taken in proper dose and for the right condition, but some people may feel mild heaviness, acidity, or intolerance depending on their body type. So it is always better to start in low dose and observe. If you are already on prescription medicines, continue them and avoid stopping suddenly. Ayurvedic treatment can be taken alongside with proper guidance. Regards, Dr Raghuveer (Ayurvedacharya)
