What would you recommend for forgetfulness, anger and behaviour not normal. My father is nearly 82 and has been experiences these for about a year. His has been suffering from sleepiness nights for years. Which doesn't help his moods. My poor mother has to cope with a lot. Have you heard of Inosital - B8?

Assessment (Ayurvedic View): Vata aggravation in old age (Jara Avastha), Manovaha Srotas imbalance, Nidranasha (chronic insomnia), Smriti Bhramsha (memory impairment), and Chittodvega/Krodha (irritability, anger). -----Internal Medicines 1) Brahmi Vati – 1 tablet twice daily after food. 2) Saraswatarishta – 15 ml with equal water twice daily after meals. 3) Ashwagandha Churna – 3 g with warm milk at bedtime. 4) Kalyanaka Ghrita – 5 ml in the morning with warm water or milk (if digestion permits). ----Panchakarma Therapies 5)Shiro Abhyanga with Brahmi Taila/Ksheerabala Taila – daily. 6) Shirodhara with medicated oil or Takra – 30–45 minutes daily for 7–14 days. 7) Nasya with Anu Taila or Ksheerabala Taila – under physician supervision. 8) Matra Basti with Ksheerabala Taila – beneficial for aggravated Vata and age-related cognitive decline. 9) Pada Abhyanga (foot massage with Ksheerabala Taila) before sleep. -----Diet & Lifestyle Warm, freshly cooked, easily digestible meals. Regular sleep schedule; avoid daytime oversleeping. Gentle walking, meditation, prayer, and memory-stimulating activities. Soaked almonds, walnuts, cow’s ghee (if suitable), and milk may be beneficial. Avoid excessive tea, coffee, processed foods, and late-night screen exposure. -----Important Advice At 82 years of age, new-onset forgetfulness, behavioral changes, and anger should be evaluated by a physician/neurologist to rule out conditions such as dementia, vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid disorders, medication effects, or other neurological causes. Ayurvedic treatment can be supportive but should complement a proper medical assessment.

The symptoms you describe in your 82-year-old father—increasing forgetfulness, anger, personality changes, unusual behavior, and long-standing poor sleep—should not be considered a normal part of aging. These symptoms can occur with cognitive decline, dementia, depression, medication side effects, thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, infections, sleep disorders, or other medical conditions. A medical evaluation is important, especially since the changes have been progressing over about a year. Ayurvedic understanding From an Ayurvedic perspective, this condition may involve: Vata aggravation in old age (Vata naturally increases with aging). Disturbance of Majja Dhatu (nervous system tissues). Reduced nourishment of the brain and mind (Manovaha Srotas imbalance). Chronic insomnia further aggravating Vata and affecting memory, mood, and emotional stability. The treatment focus is usually: Vata Shamana (calming Vata) Medhya Rasayana (memory-supportive rejuvenation) Improving sleep Maintaining digestion and nutrition Ayurvedic medicines commonly considered For memory and cognition Brahmi Shankhapushpi Mandukaparni Ashwagandha (if suitable for his constitution and medical history) Common formulations used by Ayurvedic practitioners include: Brahmi Ghrita Saraswatarishta Smriti Sagar Ras Kalyanaka Ghrita For sleep and irritability Warm milk with a small pinch of nutmeg at bedtime (if tolerated). Gentle foot massage with sesame oil before sleep. Brahmi or Jatamansi-based preparations Diet recommendations Prefer Warm, freshly cooked meals Moong dal khichdi Ghee in moderate quantity Almonds (if digestion permits) Seasonal fruits Soups and easy-to-digest foods Avoid Excess tea, coffee, and alcohol Packaged and highly processed foods Very dry, cold, or stale foods Late-night heavy meals Lifestyle recommendations Fixed sleep and wake times. Daily gentle walking according to his capacity. Exposure to morning sunlight. Calm conversation and familiar routines. Avoid arguing when he becomes angry or confused; redirection is usually more effective than correction. About Inositol (sometimes called Vitamin B8) Inositol is not actually a vitamin but a naturally occurring compound. It has been studied more for anxiety, mood disorders, and metabolic health than for dementia. There is currently insufficient evidence to recommend it as a primary treatment for memory loss or behavioral changes in an 82-year-old with possible cognitive decline. It should not replace a proper medical assessment.

I hear you, and my heart goes out to your family. Caring for an aging parent who is undergoing major cognitive and behavioral changes is incredibly taxing, especially for your mother. Balancing sleep deprivation with sudden mood shifts like anger requires immense patience and strength, so please extend my deep empathy to her. •Addressing Inositol (Vitamin B8) Yes, I am very familiar with it. In modern nutritional science, Inositol (often referred to as Vitamin B8, though it is technically a carbocyclic sugar) plays a crucial role in cellular signaling and is a component of cell membranes in the brain. How it works: It regulates neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which impact mood, anxiety, and sleep. Ayurvedic/Clinical View: While Inositol is widely used for anxiety and panic disorders, its efficacy in a 1944-born (82-year-old) patient showing signs of potential age-related cognitive decline or dementia needs careful navigation. It can support cellular health, but it should not be treated as a standalone cure for progressive geriatric forgetfulness and behavioral changes. Always check with his primary physician or geriatrician before starting it, as high doses can cause mild gastrointestinal upset. 2. Ayurvedic Line of Management In Ayurveda, we treat this by Calming Vata, Soothing Pitta, and Nourishing the Majja Dhatu (Nervous System). A. Medhya Rasayanas (Brain Tonics) These are classical Ayurvedic herbs that rejuvenate mind functions, improve retention, and induce calm: Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) & Mandukaparni (Centella asiatica): Excellent for cooling Pitta (reducing anger) and improving cognitive function. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): A premier Vata-pacifying adaptogen. It is highly effective for counteracting chronic sleeplessness, reducing cortisol, and strengthening the nervous system. Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis): Superb for calming an agitated mind and improving sleep quality. B. External Therapies (Crucial for Sleep & Anger) Because internal medicine can sometimes be heavy for an 82-year-old digestive system (Agni), external Vata-pacifying therapies are exceptionally safe and effective: Shiroabhyanga (Head Massage): Gently massaging his scalp daily with Kshirabala Thailam or Brahmi Thailam cools the brain and induces deep sleep. Padaabhyanga (Foot Massage): Rubbing warm sesame oil or Ghee on the soles of his feet right before bedtime is a time-tested Ayurvedic remedy for chronic insomnia. Nasya: Putting 2 drops of lukewarm Anu Thailam or pure Cow’s Ghee (Ghritha) into each nostril in the morning on an empty stomach nourishes the Shringataka Marma (brain centers). 3. Practical Diet & Lifestyle Tips for Your Mother to Implement Warm, Unctuous Food: Feed him fresh, warm, easily digestible foods with a good amount of Ghee. Avoid dry, cold, or processed foods which aggressively aggravate Vata. Routine: Fix a rigid time for meals and bedtime. Vata stabilizes beautifully with a predictable routine. Calm Environment: Reduce loud noises, bright lights, or confusing situations in the evening to prevent “sundowning” (increased confusion/anger as evening approaches).
