Rash, red spots on the body, itching - #116
Good afternoon. My daughter's gynecologist prescribed Elgin vaginal candles for 10 days. After 3 candles, small spots and redness appeared on the body. She did not connect them in any way with taking the drug and continued treatment. Today is the 7th day and all this has worsened, spots have appeared on the head and face. They itch and burn. Please tell me, is it an allergy, or maybe it's not related to candle treatment at all? There is also swelling and itching at the place of application of candles.

Doctors’ responses
It sounds like your daughter may be experiencing an allergic reaction to the Elgin vaginal candles. The appearance of spots, redness, itching, burning, and swelling—especially in areas related to the medication’s application—suggests a possible allergy or sensitivity to one of the ingredients in the candles.
Here’s what she can do:
Stop using the candles immediately to prevent further irritation or worsening of symptoms. Consult the gynecologist or a healthcare professional as soon as possible to discuss these symptoms. They may advise switching to a different treatment or prescribe something to manage the allergic reaction, like antihistamines or topical medications. Monitor for severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or hives, which could indicate a more serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). If any of these occur, seek emergency medical care immediately. Use soothing products for the skin, such as hypoallergenic creams or aloe vera gel, to relieve itching and burning. It’s important to address this quickly to prevent further complications.
It sounds like your daughter is experiencing concerning symptoms that may be related to the use of the Elgin vaginal candles. The appearance of spots, redness, itching, burning, and swelling at the site of application, along with new symptoms on her head and face, could indicate an allergic reaction or irritation caused by the medication. While it’s possible that these symptoms are unrelated, the timing suggests they could be connected. To provide better guidance, could you share more details about her overall health, any known allergies, and whether she has experienced similar reactions in the past?
In Ayurveda, addressing such symptoms would involve identifying the underlying imbalances in her body. Aloe Vera gel can be applied topically to soothe the skin and alleviate itching and burning sensations. Neem (Azadirachta indica) is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties; using neem oil or neem leaf extract may help reduce redness and itching. Internal remedies such as Triphala can aid in detoxification and promote skin health.
Incorporating Panchakarma treatments, such as Shirodhara or Abhyanga, could also be beneficial in relieving stress and promoting relaxation, which may assist in alleviating skin conditions. However, it’s essential to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalized treatment plan tailored to her specific symptoms and needs. Meanwhile, I recommend stopping the vaginal candles and consulting a healthcare provider to discuss these reactions and ensure she receives appropriate care.
Ah, based on your description, it does sound quite likely that your daughter is experiencing an allergic reaction to the Elgin vaginal candles. The appearance of spots, redness, itching, and burning – especially alongside new swelling and itching at the application site – are classic signs of an allergy. It’s good you caught this! Sometimes our bodies just don’t take well to certain substances, so it isn’t unusual, but it does need attention.
First things first, I’d suggest discontinuing the use of these candles immediately. It’s always better to be safe and avoid further irritation. Allergies can sometimes get worse over time with continued exposure, you know?
Now, about addressing the symptoms… Since this involves both skin reactions and maybe even internal irritation, it would be wise to consult a doctor or an allergist, a professional who can give specific medical advice on how to manage this situation. They might recommend antihistamines to manage the itching and redness or another course of action more appropriate to her symptoms.
In terms of Ayurveda, there’s some stuff that can be soothing. A cold compress can provide immediate relief from burning and itching. Applying a paste made of sandalwood powder and a little bit of rose water on the affected area can cool down the heat and soothe the skin. Try this gently on a small patch first though.
Also, internally cooling herbs could help. Aloe vera juice is known for its cooling properties and could be beneficial. Consuming it might help tackle the internal heat causing these symptoms. About 20-30 ml in water, before meals twice a day can be good.
And oh, focus on a pitta-pacifying diet for now: avoid spicy, sour, and overly salty foods as these can aggravate skin conditions. Lots of cooling foods like cucumber, coconut water, and sweet juicy fruits should be introduced.
Do ensure to follow up with healthcare professional, though maybe a different gynecologist if possible, for an alternative treatment or to discuss these allergies. Her health first!
