Fistula surgery - Can Ayurveda Help with Recovery and Prevent Recurrence? - #16492

Anonymously

A few weeks ago, I had fistula surgery, and while the pain has reduced, I still feel discomfort and occasional drainage from the area. The doctor told me that healing can take time, but I’m worried about how long it will last. I’ve heard that even after fistula surgery, there’s a chance it can come back. I really don’t want to go through the pain again, so I’m looking for natural ways to heal faster and prevent recurrence. Before the fistula surgery, I had been dealing with pain, swelling, and occasional pus discharge near the anal region for several months. It started with a small lump that would sometimes swell and then reduce on its own. Antibiotics helped at first, but the problem kept coming back. Eventually, the doctor said it was a fistula and recommended fistula surgery as the best option. The procedure itself wasn’t too bad, but the recovery has been slow, and I feel like the wound is not healing as quickly as I expected. I’ve been reading about Ayurvedic treatments like Kshar Sutra, which is supposed to be effective for fistulas. Is this something that could help even after fistula surgery? Can Ayurveda help in making sure the area heals properly and that the fistula doesn’t return? I also want to know if there are specific Ayurvedic herbs or dietary recommendations that can help reduce inflammation and promote faster healing. Another thing that worries me is digestion. Ever since the fistula surgery, I’ve been trying to avoid constipation, but sometimes I still feel bloated or have mild discomfort. Could Ayurvedic remedies help with better digestion and prevent excessive strain while passing stools? I’d really appreciate any advice from people who have used Ayurveda after fistula surgery to speed up healing and prevent further complications. What worked best for you? Are there specific oils, herbal pastes, or lifestyle changes that made a real difference?

Post-fistula surgery healing can take time, and proper care is essential to prevent recurrence. Ayurveda focuses on reducing inflammation, promoting wound healing, and maintaining digestive health to avoid strain. Kshar Sutra is highly effective for treating fistulas and preventing recurrence, but since you have already undergone surgery, Ayurvedic support can still help in healing. Herbs like Triphala, Haritaki, and Guggulu aid digestion and prevent constipation, while Turmeric and Neem help prevent infections and promote tissue repair. Sitz baths with Triphala or Panchavalkala decoction can soothe the area and accelerate healing. Applying Jatyadi Taila externally can support wound recovery. A light, fiber-rich diet with warm, easily digestible foods, ghee, and adequate hydration is crucial. Avoid spicy, fried, and heavy foods that aggravate Pitta and cause digestive issues. With consistent Ayurvedic care, you can enhance healing and reduce the risk of recurrence.

Post-fistula surgery healing takes time, but Ayurveda can support faster recovery and prevent recurrence. Since fistulas are linked to poor digestion and excess Pitta, focus on reducing inflammation and improving gut health. Triphala powder, taken at night with warm water, helps prevent constipation and ensures smooth bowel movements without straining. Ghee and aloe vera juice can also soothe the digestive tract. For wound healing, Ayurvedic herbs like Turmeric, Neem, and Guggulu have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Applying Jatyadi oil or Neem oil to the affected area can promote faster healing. Sitz baths with Triphala or neem decoction help keep the area clean and reduce infection risk. Kshar Sutra therapy is effective for fistulas but is usually done as an alternative to surgery. After surgery, Ayurvedic tonics like Ashwagandha and Shatavari can help restore strength. Avoid spicy, oily, and heavy foods—instead, eat light, fiber-rich meals like khichdi, soups, and steamed vegetables to support digestion and healing. To prevent recurrence, keep digestion strong with buttermilk (takra), cumin water, and ginger tea. Avoid sitting for long hours and practice gentle yoga poses like Malasana (Garland Pose) and Pawanmuktasana (Wind-Relieving Pose) to improve circulation.
