Struggling to sleep and relying on medications can be challenging. Ayurveda studies sleep as an integral part of life, and balancing our doshas can play a big role here. According to Ayurveda, imbalance in Vata dosha often leads to anxiety and insomnia issues. There are few steps, including herbal remedies and lifestyle changes, you might consider, and although nothing can immediately replace prescription. Let’s see what fits your life.

A natural Ayurvedic remedy that could be helpful is Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera). Known for its adaptability to stress, it can help nourish your nervous system. A commonly suggested dose is 500 mg daily, but consult a practitioner for personal advice.

Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is another herb promoting calmness and mental clarity. Taking Brahmi powder with warm milk, before sleep, could encourage restful nights.

Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), a calming herb, helps pacify the mind. You might consider adding it to your bedtime routine.

Drinks like warm turmeric milk with a pinch of nutmeg can serve as a soothing bedtime routine. It’s best consumed 30 minutes before getting to bed.

Beyond herbs, lifestyle changes can be profound. Creating a consistent sleep schedule, by sleeping and waking up at the same time, can redefine your body clock. Avoid screen exposure an hour before sleep, replacing it with light reading or breathing exercises.

Practices such as Abhyanga, oil massage, with warm sesame oil can decrease Vata’s imbalance. Massaging the scalp and feet in particular might be helpful.

Keep in mind, it may be worth consulting with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to address the root of your sleep challenges, and any changes should be coordinated with your doctor especially when tapering off prescriptions, to prioritize your wellbeing.
