Based on what you’re describing, it sounds like you’re dealing with a couple of challenging symptoms that could be interconnected. In Ayurveda, difficulty with swallowing solid food and disrupted sleep might be linked to an imbalance in the Vata and Pitta doshas. When Vata is aggravated, it might disrupt the coordination in the muscles necessary for swallowing, and an aggravated Pitta can lead to restlessness at night, afecting your sleep pattern.
First, for the swallowing difficulty, focus on foods that are easy to digest and chew. Soft, moist, and warm foods might be more suitable right now. You can try foods like soups, stews, or well-cooked khichdi. Adding a bit of ghee might also help lubricate and soothe your throat. Pay attention to eating mindfully, in a calm and relaxed environment. Avoid eating on the go or when agitated, as that can agitate Vata.
For sleep issues, try establishing a calming routine before bed. Consider drinking a glass of warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg—known for its calming properties—about an hour before sleep. Creating a sleep environment that’s conducive to rest can also make a big difference. Keep your bedroom dark, cool, and quiet, and eliminate electronic device exposure at least an hour before bed. Consider practicing some gentle yoga or deep breathing exercises in the evening to help ground Vata and settle your mind.
With both conditions, maintaining a regular daily routine is highly beneficial. Try to wake up and go to bed at the same time each day and eat at regular intervals. Given the nature of your symptoms, it might be wise to consult with a healthcare professional as well, especially to rule out any significant medical condition lurking beneath these symptoms. Recognizing the value of integration between Ayurveda and Western medicine will ensure your safety and well-being.
