HELLO PRACHI,
You are likely Kapha-pitta predominant, which means your body naturally tends to gain weight, hold water, and have issues related to digestion and metabolism, especially if your lifestyle is sedentary or stressful
WHAT IS PCOD IN AYURVEDA? In Ayurveda, PCOD is described as a yoni vyapad(disorder of female reproductive system), especially “ARTAVA DUSHTI”(impure or disturbed menstrual blood). It mainly occurs due to -Kapha accumulation= blocked the channels and causes cysts -medo dhatu (fat tissue) imbalance - agni(digestive fire) is low- causing poor metabolism -Aama(toxins) formulation due to indigestion food
THIS CAUSES -irregular and painful periods -hormonal imbalance - obesity -hairfall/acne - mood swings/anxiety
TREATMENT GOALS -reduces excess kapha and meda(fat) -clears aama(toxins) and improve agni(metabolism) -balance hormones naturally - regulates menstrual cycle and reduce pain - calm the mind and reduce anxiety (Manas doshas)
AYURVEDIC TREATMENT
1) TRIPHALA CHURNA= 1 tsp with warm water at bedtime for 3-6 months =removes toxins, improves gut health, help with weight loss

DR. MAITRI ACHARYA
hello Prachi,
Thank you for sharing clearly. What you’re experiencing — delayed periods, weight gain, hair loss, pigmentation, and low mood — are common symptoms seen in PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease). This condition affects your hormones, metabolism, and ovulation. The root cause often lies in hormonal imbalance, excess Kapha & Meda (fat tissue), and poor digestion and metabolism (Agni imbalance). But it is reversible, with regular effort.
In PCOD, your ovaries don’t release eggs properly due to hormonal disturbance. This causes periods to become irregular or stop altogether. Excess androgens (male hormones) also lead to facial hair, hair fall, acne, and pigmentation. Because your metabolism is slow, weight increases easily, especially around the belly. Over time, this affects your mental health too — mood swings, sadness, low confidence, etc.
You’re not alone in this — but continuing to depend on pills every month is not the long-term answer. Ayurveda can help restart natural cycles, reduce cysts, improve hair and skin, and uplift your mood, slowly but steadily.
Treatment Plan: 1. Ama Pachana (First 3–5 days)
To clean gut and improve metabolism before hormone regulation:
Trikatu Churna – ½ tsp with warm water before lunch and dinner Avipattikar Churna – 1 tsp at night with warm water (for digestion, bloating)
2. Internal Medicines (Start after 3–5 days):
Pushyanug Churna – 1 tsp with honey and warm water twice daily Rajahpravartini Vati – 1 tablet twice daily after meals (for regular periods) Kanchanar Guggulu – 2 tablets twice daily (for cyst resolution, weight) Ashokarishta – 20 ml with equal water twice daily after meals Manasmitra Vatakam – 1 tablet at bedtime (for anxiety and mood balance)
Diet + Lifestyle (Important as medicine): Avoid milk, curd, sugar, bakery, fried foods Include jeera water, methi water, and soaked almonds in the morning Eat dinner by 7:30 PM, avoid lying down immediately Do 15–20 mins brisk walk + surya namaskar (5 rounds) daily Practice Bhramari Pranayama and Anulom Vilom (for hormonal and mental balance)
Investigations to Be Done (if not already): Pelvic Ultrasound Serum FSH, LH, Prolactin Fasting Insulin & Glucose Vitamin D3 & B12
How many months have you not got your periods naturally? Are you currently taking any hormonal pills or allopathy medicines? What is your usual energy level — tired all day or active sometimes?
This needs consistent support — but you can get back your cycles naturally, improve hair, and feel like yourself again. Let’s go step-by-step with patience. Take care and feel free to follow up.

Dealing with PCOD, known in Ayurveda as Aartava Kshaya or Yoni Vyapad, can be challenging, but with a holistic approach, you can find improvement. PCOD is often linked to an imbalance of the Kapha dosha, affecting metabolism, leading to weight gain, and hormonal imbalance. Integrating Ayurvedic principles can support natural balance and harmony in your body. Focus first on diet—consume light, warm, and easily digestible foods to boost your Agni (digestive fire), which is crucial for correcting imbalances. Avoid processed foods, excess sugar, and dairy if intolerance exists, as these aggravate Kapha and can worsen symptoms.
Daily intake of herbs such as Shatavari and Ashwagandha can promote hormonal balance. Shatavari is known to support reproductive health and regulate menstrual cycles, while Ashwagandha helps reduce stress and stabilize mood swings. Dosage is crucial; typically, 1 teaspoon mixed with warm milk or water once or twice daily, but consult with a practitioner for personalized recommendations.
Yoga plays a vital role; poses like Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose) and Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) enhance blood circulation and stimulate your reproductive organs. Practicing daily with Pranayama, especially Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing), can alleviate stress and anxiety, often associated with hormonal imbalance.
Regular Abhyanga (self-massage) with warm sesame or coconut oil can pacify Vata, which influences mental health, while also nourishing your skin, potentially reducing pigmentation. This can be done before bathing for 15 to 20 minutes daily. Allowing yourself moments of mindfulness can also ease the spirit—meditation or simple deep-breathing exercises can support mental well-being.
If these suggestions do not alleviate symptoms, continuous medical supervision is essential. Though Ayurveda can assist in rebalancing your systems, make sure to continue with, follow, or adjust any necessary allopathic treatments in coordination with your healthcare providers.
Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD) can indeed disrupt your balance and wellbeing, often due to aggravated Kapha dosha and hormonal imbalances. In Siddha-Ayurvedic practice, the focus will be on restoring this balance through diet, lifestyle, and herbal remedies, while also addressing metabolic fire (agni) issues.
Firstly, let’s focus on diet and lifestyle adjustments. Reducing consumption of refined carbs and sugars is important as they can lead to weight gain and further exacerbate Kapha imbalance. Favor whole grains (like quinoa or barley), plenty of fresh vegetables, and lean proteins. Avoid cold and heavy foods, as they can worsen Kapha. Incorporating daily physical activity is vital, whether it’s yoga, brisk walking, or a form of exercise you enjoy – aim for at least 30 minutes most days.
Herbs like Shatavari and Ashwagandha are known for supporting reproductive health and hormonal balance. Triphala can help improve digestion and aid in weight management. Prepare a herbal tea with equal parts of cinnamon and ginger – this may help regulate your menstrual cycle by stimulating agni.
For hair loss and skin pigmentation, Bhringraj oil applied to the scalp and a paste of turmeric and sandalwood for spots can be beneficial. Also, take a teaspoon of flaxseeds daily, as they’re high in Omega-3s, which supports hair and skin health.
Mental depression often linked to Vata imbalance, consider practicing meditation or Pranayama to calm the mind. However, please note it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare provider or an Ayurvedic practitioner to personalize this approach further, especially given symptoms can vary and regular follow-ups are necessary. Continue any medications previously prescribed unless advised by your doctor, and always discuss any changes in your health plan.
