Excess oily skin and persistent acne often arise from an imbalance in the Kapha and Pitta doshas in Ayurveda. Addressing these imbalances can help manage the condition. Start by focusing on your diet. Reduce intake of spicy, oily, and fried foods which aggravate Pitta and Kapha. Instead, favor fresh fruits (apples, pears), vegetables (leafy greens, carrots) and whole grains like barley and quinoa. Drink warm water through out the day, and incorporate herbal teas such as ginger or green tea to help detoxify the body.
Include herbs like neem and turmeric in your daily routine. Neem, known for its antibacterial properties, can be consumed as a capsule or used topically in a paste form. Turmeric is beneficial due to its anti-inflammatory effects; adding a pinch of it to warm milk or water can be quite effective.
Your daily routine also matters. Wash your face with lukewarm water twice a day using an herbal cleanser containing ingredients like sandalwood or rose water. Avoid using chemical-based skin products that might irritate your skin. Ayurveda recommends applying a paste of sandalwood powder mixed with rose water to the face, leaving it on for about 15-20 minutes before rinsing, to help reduce oiliness and promote a clear complexion.
Lifestyle improvements, like getting 7-8 hours of restful sleep and engaging in regular moderate exercise like yoga or brisk walking, can significantly reduce stress levels, which in turn can improve your skin condition. Practicing Pranayama (breathing exercises) helps in reducing stress and balancing internal energies.
Lastly, avoid touching your face unnecessarily to prevent spreading bacteria and accumulation of dirt. If your acne is severe, or if there’s pain and discomfort, consult with a qualified ayurvedic practitioner or dermatologist to tailor a treatment plan suited to your specific needs. Immediate medical intervention may be required for conditions that don’t improve with these measures.
