Irregular periods and the recent history of fibroid surgery at your age requires a nuanced approach. Irregulaties in the menstrual cycle can occur due to various reasons, not just pre-menopause. It’s not uncommon to see menstrual changes after fibroid removal as the body adjusts. However, at 42, it is also possible that you could be approaching perimenopause, which is the phase before menopause where hormonal fluctuation impact the cycles.
In terms of conception, it’s essential to consider both the health of your reproductive system and hormonal balance. Ayurvedic perspective would look at ensuring that your doshas—especially Vata and Pitta—are balanced as imbalances here can lead to issues such as irregular periods. Increasing your agni or digestive fire, optimizing your dhatus or bodily tissues, especially the shukra dhatu, responsible for reproduction is crucial.
I recommend starting with a diet that supports hormonal balance. Include whole grains like quinoa, barley, and incorporate leafy greens, nuts, and seeds like almonds, chia, and pumpkin seeds, rich in vitamins and minerals that promote regular cycles. Avoid excessive caffeine, packaged and processed foods as these could aggravate Vata and Pitta.
Aim for regular exercise such as brisk walking or yoga, that helps in maintaining optimal weight and improving circulation, crucial for reproductive health. Practicing pranayama particularly anulom vilom and nadi shodhana, helps reduce stress and balance the nervous system, impacting menstrual cycles positively. Ensure you’re getting adequate sleep as this helps in producing necessary hormones for menstrual health.
Consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can suggest personalized herbs, like Ashoka and Shatavari, known to support female reproductive health and regulate menstrual cycles. While Ayurveda offers substantial support, it’s crucial to speak with your gynecologist to explore all aspects, including hormonal assessments and understanding your fertility status. This dual approach bridges traditional wisdom with modern care, helping you plan the next steps in your reproductive journey safely and effectively.
Irregular periods at 42 can suggest hormonal fluctuations that might be indicative of perimenopause. However, other factors like stress, lifestyle changes, or your recent fibroid surgery could also play a role. For conception, age is a significant factor since fertility tends to decrease as women approach their 40s. The operated fibroid could have impacted your reproductive organs, but without more information it’s hard to determine the specific implications.
Clinically, evaluating your ovarian reserve and hormone levels, like FSH and AMH, could provide insight into menopausal status and fertility potential. It might be a good idea to consult with a gynecologist for detailed assessments.
From a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, we could look at balancing the vata dosha, which often predominates during the transition to menopause, and can cause irregular cycles. Dietary changes like incorporating warm, cooked foods, and healthy fats such as ghee can nourish and stabilize vata. Ashwagandha or Shatavari, traditionally used to support female reproductive health, may also be of benefit but should be taken under guidance.
Regular yoga and prana vidya (breathwork) can help balance hormonal shifts and maintain energy flow through nadis. Consider traditional formulations such as Dashamoolarishtam or Ashokarishta to support the female reproductive system. These should only be undertaken with appropriate supervision from a trained Ayurvedic practitioner, especially considering associated conditions. Seeking prompt medical evaluation if any symptoms (severe pain, heavy bleeding) occur is prudent for overall well-being.
