Hello Thank you for sharing your concern regarding persistent dandruff for several months associated with frequent itching and headaches

✅PROBABLE CAUSES

–Excessive use of chemical hair products or frequent shampooing, –Irregular sleep and mental stress, –Improper diet such as excessive oily, sour, fermented, or junk food, –Incomplete cleansing of scalp or accumulation of Ama (toxins).

Avoid the above causes to prevent further recurrence

The dandruff in your case is causing irritation of scalp nerves and possibly affecting circulation, leading to headaches. Hence, a combined Shirochikitsa (head and scalp therapy) along with internal purification is essential.

✅AYURVEDIC PLAN OF TREATMENT

✅INTERNAL MEDICATION

1 Triphala Churna – 1 teaspoon with warm water at night to detoxify the system.

2 Arogyavardhini Vati – 1 tablet twice daily after meals for liver and skin purification.

3 Sarivadyasava – 20 ml twice daily with equal water after food to purify blood and reduce dandruff-related inflammation.

4.pathyakshadhyadi ks tab 2-0-2 after food ( for headache)

4 Jeevanrutham 1 tsp morning empty stomach followed by warm water ( for hair nourishment)

✅LOCAL THERAPY

✅Shiro Abhyanga (Head Massage):

👉Use Durdurpatradi Taila Gently massage your scalp for 10–15 minutes daily before bath. This reduces dryness, itching, and relieves tension headaches.

👉 Lepa (Scalp Herbal Paste):

Mix Triphala Churna + Neem powder + Bhringraj powder in aloe vera gel or rose water. Apply this paste on scalp, keep for 20 minutes, and wash off with lukewarm water. It reduces infection, itching, and excess oil.

👉 Hair Wash (Shiro Prakshalana):

Use herbal shampoo or decoction prepared from Triphala, Neem, Hibiscus leaves, and Methi seeds once or twice a week. Avoid chemical-based shampoos as they disturb scalp pH.

✅DIET MODIFICATION

✅Include

Consume freshly prepared, light, and easy-to-digest food. Include green leafy vegetables, fruits like amla, pomegranate, and ghee in moderate quantity. Drink sufficient lukewarm water. Take Amla juice or Triphala juice daily in the morning to cool the scalp and body.

❌Avoid

Oily, spicy, fermented, and non-vegetarian food. Excessive coffee, tea, alcohol, or stress. Sleeping late at night or sleeping during the daytime.

✅LIFESTYLE AND HAIR CARE TIPS

Keep the scalp clean and dry; do not share combs or towels. Practice Shirasasana, Anulom-Vilom, and Bhramari Pranayama to improve circulation and relieve stress headaches. Ensure adequate sleep of 7–8 hours daily. Avoid scratching the scalp as it can lead to infection or folliculitis.

With consistent care for 4–6 weeks, you should notice marked relief in itching, scaling, and headache frequency.

Wishing you a good health😊

Warm regards, Dr Snehal Vidhate

To address your dandruff issue and associated symptoms like headaches and scalp itching, we need to consider a comprehensive approach rooted in Ayurvedic principles.

Firstly, dandruff can often be linked to an imbalance in the Kapha and Pitta doshas. For treating dandruff effectively, it’s important to focus on external applications and internal remedies. Start by applying coconut oil mixed with a few drops of lemon juice on your scalp. Do this twice a week. Leave the mixture on your scalp for at least an hour before washing it off with a mild herbal shampoo. Choose natural shampoos containing neem or tea tree oil, as they have antifungal properties which can help clear dandruff.

Internally, strengthening your agni, or digestive fire, is crucial. Consume a diet that is light and easy to digest, favoring warm, cooked foods over cold or raw items. Include spice like cumin, coriander, and turmeric, which aid digestion and help balance doshas. Avoid oily, spicy, and overly processed foods, as they can aggravate Pitta and Kapha.

For headaches, often associated with Pitta aggravation, hydration is key. Drink plenty of water infused with fresh mint leaves or fennel seeds. Practicing Shitali Pranayama, a cooling breathing technique, can also prove beneficial. Simply roll your tongue into a tube, inhale deeply, hold for a moment, and then exhale through the nostrils. Do this for a few minutes daily to reduce heat in the body.

Additionally, incorporate a regular scalp massage with Brahmi or Bhringraj oil, both of which are known for their cooling and calming properties. This helps alleviate tension, thereby reducing headaches, and also nourishes the hair and scalp.

Prioritize reducing stress through meditation or daily yoga practices, and ensure you get adequate sleep, as stress and sleep deprivation can exacerbate both dandruff and headaches. If symptoms persist or worsen, consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner is advised for personalized guidance.

Dandruff and headaches often have interconnected roots in Ayurveda, as both can be associated with imbalances in the doshas, especially a Vata-Pitta imbalance. Addressing them involves a combination of topical treatments and internal balancing.

For dandruff, start with a clarified butter (ghee) scalp massage. Apply gently warmed ghee to your scalp and massage it in circular motions, ideally in the evening. Leave it overnight for best results; this soothes the Pitta and nourishes the scalp. Rinse off thoroughly the next morning with a mild herbal shampoo containing ingredients like bhringraj or neem, which have natural antifungal properties.

Additionally, incorporate amla and neem leaves paste application once a week. Grind fresh neem leaves with water and mix with amla powder or fresh gooseberry to form a paste. Apply on the scalp and leave for 30-40 minutes before washing it off. This helps reduce itching and roots out the underlying infection causing dandruff.

For headaches, focus on cooling and grounding practices. Try incorporating Brahmi in your diet, it is a renowned herb for calming the mind. You can brew a tea using Brahmi powder and consume it twice daily. Also, practice shirodhara, a stream of warm oil applied to the forehead, if accessible to manage stress-related headaches efficiently.

Ensure you maintain a diet balancing Vata and Pitta—favoring sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes while avoiding excessively spicy, sour, and salty foods. Drink warm water throughout the day to support Agni and ensure proper hydration. If symptoms persist or worsen, it may be advisable to consult with a local Ayurvedic practitioner or a healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation. They can offer a more personalized treatment tailored to your unique constitution and symptoms.
