Weight Gain and Bloating Concerns on Medication - #40135

Client_bc3c83

Hi, I’m 33 year old female. I gained 30 lbs in 6 months. I’m on 300 mg of lithium and 75 mg of lamotrigine for depression. I had a psychotic episode about 16 months ago so regular antidepressants won’t work. My diet didn’t change. I do eat a lot of salt. How can I loose the weight or at least some of it, and reduce the bloating?

How long have you been experiencing weight gain and bloating?:

- More than 6 months

What is your typical daily water intake?:

Weight gain and bloating could be a side effect of the medication or related changes in metabolism. Ayurveda suggests that addressing both the root causes and imbalances in your body can be key to managing these issues effectively. Your prakriti, or body constitution, is essential here but given the medications, a cautious approach is required.

First, a diet that helps balance Kapha dosha may assist with weight management. Limit foods that are oily, heavy, and dense — such as fried items, dairy, and excessive salt (which can contribute to water retention and bloating). Instead, focus on lighter, warm, and easily digestible foods like steamed vegetables, whole grains like quinoa or barley, and legumes. Consider incorporating spices like turmeric, ginger, and black pepper, which can help enhance digestion with their heating qualities.

Hydration is crucial, drink lukewarm water throughout the day to aid digestion and reduce Kapha imbalance. Avoid cold beverages, which can dampen Agni — the digestive fire — leading to sluggish metabolism.

For exercises, focus on gentle yet regular activity. This could be brisk walking or yoga, specifically postures that stimulate digestion such as twists and forward bends. This helps improve circulation and support the body’s natural detox processes.

Pay attention to meal timings. Late dinners can stagnate metabolism and may prevent the body from effectively burning calories. Aim to have your last meal of the day at least a few hours before sleep.

Incorporating mindfulness practices like meditation can be supportive in managing stress, which is often linked to eating patterns and digestion issues. But remember to coordinate with your healthcare provider when making any significant dietary or lifestyle changes, especially because of your current medication regimen. Lastly, even a minor symptom change or persistently worsening condition should be discussed with a healthcare professional immediately.

Your weight gain could be linked to your current medication regime, which can sometimes lead to metabolic changes, including weight gain and bloating. In Ayurveda, weight issues are often related to an imbalance in kapha dosha, and with your bloating, vata imbalances may also be involved.

First, examine your salt intake. Although your diet hasn’t changed, lithium can affect sodium balance, and consuming high amounts of salt may contribute to water retention and bloating. Try reducing your salt intake – maybe cut it down by half initially – and adjust further if needed. You may find that this alone reduces bloating noticeably.

Focus on foods that enhance agni, or digestive fire, to help manage weight and bloating. Opt for warm, freshly prepared meals that are light on your digestion, including cooked vegetables, legumes, and whole grains like quinoa and rice. Ginger, cumin, fennel, and coriander can be helpful to improve digestion — try including them in teas or while cooking.

Since medication adjustments shouldn’t be made without your healthcare provider’s guidance, continue working with them to monitor any changes. Ayurvedically, gentle daily exercise supports balance in kapha and reduces weight – try a brisk 30-minute walk in the morning.

Stay hydrated, and consider adding a small amount of warm water with a squeeze of lemon to start your day, aiding in flushing toxins. Avoid cold beverages and overly heavy, oily foods, which aggravate kapha. With lifestyle and diet adjustments, you might notice gradual changes, but remember to coordinate with your doctor for any medication-related adjustments and ensure these ayurvedic suggestions align with your overall treatment plan.
