I am going through menopause and suffering from joint pain and I can’t seem to lose weight. I have 17kg to lose. Please can you give me some advice?

The transition through menopause can bring about a combination of vata and pitta disturbances, commonly leading to joint pain and weight gain. Ayurvedic wisdom often looks at balancing these doshas while also addressing the metabolic slowdown.

For joint pain, it’s important to maintain warmth and lubrication. Daily abhyanga (self-massage) with warm sesame oil or Mahanarayan oil can provide nourishment to your joints. Apply oil and massage gently for about 15-20 minutes, preferably in the morning before a warm shower. Additionally, consuming a small amount of pure ghee (clarified butter) can be beneficial for lubricating joints from the inside and aiding digestion.

Addressing weight, Ayurveda emphasizes a balance of agni (digestive fire) to maintain healthy metabolism. Start your day with a glass of warm water mixed with lemon juice. It’s a simple routine that supports digestion and helps cleanse the system. Incorporate more warm, cooked meals rather than raw or cold foods, to help your digestive agni perform optimally. Foods such as green, leafy vegetables, brown rice, and light lentil soups support digestion without adding excess weight.

To calm both vata and pitta, include herbal teas like ginger tea or Trikatu churna in moderate amounts after meals to enhance agni. Maintain consistent meal timings, avoiding late-night eating. Yoga and mild exercises such as walking or swimming, can be helpful in shedding weight while also easing joint discomfort.

Remember not to rush weight loss; gradual shedding of pounds is more sustainable and healthier for your body. Aim to follow a disciplined routine with daily exercises and adequate rest. If the joint pain or weight issues persist, consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner can tailor remedies specific to your unique constitution. Always ensure to consider these recommendations alongside any essential medical guidance from your healthcare provider.
