The frequent occurrence of allergic cold symptoms especially near menstruation can be related to hormonal changes that often influence your body’s immune responses. Ayurveda suggests an imbalance in Vata and Kapha doshas can contribute to respiratory issues, while Pitta imbalance during menstruation might be agravating your condition. Begin by observing your diet; eliminate processed foods like bread and cheese that may trigger allergies. Opt for fresh, cooked meals incorporating turmeric and ginger to reduce inflammation. Ginger tea taken twice daily can be soothing.

During your menstrual period, focus on grounding practices. Incorporate gentle yoga poses or pranayama (breathing exercises) that balance these doshas. Anulom Vilom and Bhastrika can help improve respiratory function. Keep a regular sleep schedule, avoid late nights as Vata increases.

It’s important to pay attention to Agni – your digestive fire. Weak digestion often contributes to allergenic reactions. Consume easily digestible foods, such as warm stews or soups with spices like cumin, coriander and turmeric. Drink warm water throughout the day to support digestion and detoxification.

Consider taking Triphala (a mixture of three fruits) at bedtime—about 1/2 teaspoon with warm water-as it can help to regulate bowel movements and cleanse toxins. Avoid exposure to cold and windy conditions, use scarves or masks to protect yourself, when necessary.

Moreover, Ayurvedic herbs like Ashwagandha and Shatavari can be beneficial to support your body during menstrual cycles. However, always consult with a healthcare practitioner before starting new supplements, as individual conditions can vary greatly. If swelling persists, evaluate these foods with your healthcare provider to rule out underlying conditions and necessary dietary adjustments.
