Diarrhea and vomiting, particularly when persisting for two weeks, suggests an imbalance in your digestive system. When symptoms are severe, it’s always wise to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any severe infections or conditions. In Ayurveda, we look at symptoms like yours as a sign of weak Agni, or digestive fire, and possible imbalance in doshas, particularly Pitta and Vata.
First, consider your diet. Avoid heavy foods such as dairy, fried, processed items and spicy foods to prevent further irritation. Stick to lighter, easier-to-digest meals such as kichari – a blend of mung dal and rice cooked with cumin, ginger, and coriander. Consuming this for a few days can help stabilize your digestion.
Herbal preparations can be beneficial too. Try ginger tea to help boost digestion and reduce nausea. Boil a cup of water, add 1/2 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger, and let it steep for about 10 minutes before consuming. If possible, add a small piece of jaggery or a little honey after it’s cooled down slightly.
Turmeric – known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties – may assist in tackling the bacteria in your stomach. Add half a teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of warm water and drink it once daily.
For immediate relief from gas, Asafoetida (Hing), is renowned. Mix a pinch of hing with a little warm water and consume this, it can provide swift relief form gas and bloating. Fennel seeds or a tea made from them also help if you chew them after meals.
Hydration is critical since diarrhea and vomiting cause fluid loss. Drink plenty of clean, lukewarm water. Electrolyte solutions, if available, can help; they’re not herbal but can prevent dehydration effectively. If symptoms persist, escalate, or you experience severe dehydration signs, urgent medical attention is vital, as these could be signs of a more serious underlying condition.
