Losing your hair can be concerning but Ayurveda offers some remedies that might help. Ayurveda views hair health as closely linked to the health of bones, nails, and skin. An imbalance in the Pitta dosha—often driven by stress, digestive issues, or poor nutrition—can lead to hair loss. Therefore, identifying and balancing your doshas is a good starting point.
First, bring focus to your diet. It’s advisable to consume Pitta-balancing foods, which are generally cooling in nature. Include plenty of green leafy vegetables, cucumbers, and melons. Milk, butter, ghee, and sesame seeds are beneficial for hair health. Avoid excessive consumption of spicy, salty, or fermented foods as they can aggravate Pitta.
Next, work on your lifestyle choices. Daily oiling of the scalp can be very beneficial. Ayurvedic texts often recommend Brahmi or Bhringraj oil for this purpose. Warm the oil slightly and massage it gently onto your scalp, leave it for 30 minutes or overnight before washing it off, do this 2-3 times a week. This not only nourishes the scalp but also calms Pitta.
Herbal remedies can also be helpful. You might find success with fenugreek seeds, another traditional option. Soak them overnight, grind to a paste the next morning, and apply on the scalp, once a week. Leave this paste on for about 20-30 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water.
Stress-relieving techniques like yoga or meditation can also assist in reducing Pitta-induced hair problems as stress exacerbates hair loss.
Lastly, ensure you’re properly hydrated and maintain good digestion by drinking plenty of water and eating fresh, unprocessed foods. Ayurvedic supplements such as Amla or Triphala can improve digestion and support hair regrowth. However, it’s always good to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any supplements. Regular follow-up with an Ayurvedic practitioner can provide more personalized insights into your Prakriti and dosha balance, aiding in a more focused approach to your hair health.
