is buttermilk good for liver - #43379

Allison

I am really confused lately about my diet and health, especially about things like buttermilk. I've been feeling kinda sluggish, and my digestion is off. My friend was saying that buttermilk is good for liver health and it got me wondering. Last week, I had some blood work done, and the results showed a little elevated liver enzyme level, which freaked me out. I don’t drink much, but I've been battling with fatty food cravings—like these late-night cheese snacks that I can’t resist. I started drinking buttermilk every day as a part of my routine after hearing about its benefits, like how it can help with digestion and may support the liver, but I'm not sure if it actually works. Is buttermilk good for liver health really? I mean, can I rely on it as part of my plan to make my liver better? Also, how much should I be drinking? I do feel like it's settled my stomach a bit, but I kinda need some reassurance on if it really does anything for my liver function or if I should be looking into other options too?? I just want to feel normal again and am pretty tired of feeling like this...

Buttermilk can indeed be a beneficial addition to your diet, especially if you’re dealing with digestion and liver concerns. In Ayurveda, buttermilk is considered “takra” and is believed to aid digestion, balance the doshas, and support liver function by soothing the digestive system and aiding the elimination of toxins. The probiotics in buttermilk can improve gut health, which indirectly benefits liver function.

For your situation, consuming a small glass of buttermilk daily, around 200-250 ml, can be helpful. Consider adding a pinch of fresh ginger or cumin powder, which can further enhance its digestive benefits. Make sure it’s unsweetened and not heavily salted, as excessive salt can stress the liver.

However, buttermilk alone may not be enough if your liver enzymes are elevated. Think of it as a supporting act rather than the main one. Alongside buttermilk, adopt a liver-friendly diet. Focus on fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins. Turmeric milk can also be a powerful ally due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Limit fatty, processed foods, as well as sugar and alcohol, they can exacerbate liver strain. Stay hydrated, and make regular physical activity part of your routine. A brisk walk for about 30 minutes a day is beneficial.

Though natural remedies play an important role, it’s essential to work alongside your healthcare provider to monitor your liver enzyme levels and underlying causes a regularly. If symptoms persist, the approach towards focusing solely on diet moderation and natural aids might need reevaluation.

Buttermilk can be beneficial but ensure you’re considering other lifestyle adjustments, too. And remember, when symptoms persist or worsen, professional medical advice is vital.
