For your hair concerns, creating an Ayurvedic hair oil at home can be a beneficial approach to nourishing and revitalizing your hair. To make a basic Ayurvedic hair oil, you’ll want to use a good base oil combined with specific herbs that address your hair’s needs.
Coconut oil is an excellent base because it penetrates the hair shaft easily and provides moisture, but you can also opt for sesame oil, which is highly revered in Ayurveda for its warming and nourishing properties. Here’s a simple guideline you can follow:
1. Base Oil: Use about 100 ml of coconut or sesame oil. These oils are nourishing and balance the vata and pitta doshas, helping with dryness and brittleness.
2. Bhringraj: This herb is a powerhouse for hair health. Add 2 tablespoons of dried bhringraj leaves or powder. Known as the “king of hair,” bhringraj promotes hair growth and reduces hair fall by balancing pitta dosha.
3. Fenugreek (Methi): 1 tablespoon of fenugreek seeds is beneficial for reducing dandruff and scalp inflammation. It balances kapha, helping with any excess oil on the scalp.
4. Amla Powder: Add 1 tablespoon of amla powder. It’s rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, which strengthen the hair follicles and stimulate growth.
To prepare, gently heat the base oil in a pan on low heat. Add the bhringraj and fenugreek seeds. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Turn off the heat and add the amla powder. Let it cool and then strain the oil into a glass bottle to remove the solids.
To use, apply the oil to your scalp and hair, massaging gently. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, or overnight if possible, before washing it off with a mild shampoo. Do this 2-3 times a week.
While these ingredients are generally safe, ensure you’re not allergic to them. If your hair fall is severe or accompanied by scalp issues like irritation or infection, consider having it checked by a healthcare professional to rule out underlying conditions.
