Chronic knee and hip pain resulting from an old injury can be challenging, especially when conventional treatments haven’t provided relief. In Ayurveda, this condition may be viewed through the lens of Vata dosha imbalance, particularly within the Asthi dhatu (bone tissue), which could have been aggravated by the initial injury. This leads to impaired movement and pain, exacerbated by accumulated ama (toxins) impacting your dhatus.
Start with your diet—ensure it’s nourishing and balancing for Vata. Incorporate warm, grounding foods like soups and stews, favoring sweet, sour and salty tastes. Avoid processed foods, cold drinks or dry and raw foods which can aggravate Vata. Include spices like ginger and cumin to boost your agni (digestive fire), reducing ama.
Topically, applying warm medicated oils such as Mahanarayan or Dhanvantaram taila to the knee and hip can alleviate stiffness and pain. Warm the oil slightly and massage gently in a circular motion for about 10-15 minutes daily; it will help by enhancing circulation and soothing the affected areas.
You could also incorporate Ayurvedic formulations like Yogaraj Guggulu, which is often recommended for joint health, as it aids in detoxification and provides relief from Vata-related pain. Please consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to confirm suitability, especially if you are on other medications.
Try gentle exercises like yoga asanas—like Tadasana and Trikonasana—that emphasize stretching and gently strengthen the muscles around the affected joints without causing discomfort or strain.
Paying close attention to the signals your body sends is crucial—avoid any activity that triggers pain. And of course, if the pain persists or worsens, further evaluation by healthcare professional may be necessary since an underlying issue might need more intensive treatment.
