can we take honey with milk - #44511

Gabriella

I am really confused about something and hoping someone can help me out. Lately, I've been trying to figure out if we can take honey with milk. I mean, I always thought it was a good thing, you know? Just the other day, I was at a friend's house, and she made this warm milk with honey, saying it was super soothing — especially for sleep. But then, I read some stuff online saying mixing honey and milk can cause digestion issues. My stomach has been feeling a bit off lately, like bloated and weird whenever I drink milk honestly. I don’t know if it's just a coincidence or it’s really because I’ve been having honey with it pretty often. I love that drink before bed, but also I don’t want to mess up my tummy even more! What’s the deal? Can we take honey with milk, or is it something I should totally avoid? If it helps, I’m otherwise pretty healthy, just dealing with this digestive stuff. Looking for any advice, because I'm really torn here! Do you think there’s a right way to combine them — or maybe it just depends on the person? Anyone else had similar experiences? Would love to hear your thoughts!

The combination of honey and milk is a traditional remedy known for its soothing and nourishing properties, but there’s a nuance in Ayurveda that is important to highlight. While both honey and milk are considered to be satvic foods, which are calming and nurturing for the mind and body, their pairing does have specific guidelines in Ayurvedic dietetics.

When consumed together, warm milk with honey can enhance ojas — the essence of immunity and vitality. However, this combination needs careful attention for its potential to cause digestive disturbances when not balanced properly. One critical principle in Ayurveda is the idea of viruddha ahara, or incompatible food combinations, which can disturb digestion and lead to imbalances.

Your experience of bloating could indicate a possible imbalance, perhaps related to your Agni (digestive fire) or your prakriti (constitutional type). Typically, people with a kapha or pitta dominant constitution might experience more discomfort when consuming rich, heavy combinations, especially if digestion is sluggish or if these foods are consumed in large quantities.

If you’re experiencing digestive problems, it might be worth considering your current digestive strength and dietary habits. You can try consuming honey and milk separately, ensuring they are adequately digested individually before combining them in your routine.

For consuming them together, ensure the milk is hot and add honey only when the milk has cooled down a bit, avoid directly boiling honey as it changes its properties. Stick to a small amount of honey too. If symptoms persist, it might be worthwhile to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to assess in-depth your dosha balances and diet.

In the meantime, pay attention to your body’s responses — observing when you feel bloated can provide insights, and balancing your diet with agni-kindling spices like ginger or cumin might also support your digestion. As always, if digestion issues continue, consulting with healthcare provider is recommended.
