is curd acidic or basic - #44752

Grayson

I am really confused about something I’ve been dealing with lately. I read that “is curd acidic or basic” but honestly, I’m not sure how to interpret that in my diet. For the last couple of months, I’ve been feeling super bloated after meals, and I thought maybe it was the takeout, but just last week, I had homemade curd and it seemed to make it worse. Like, one moment, I’m fine, and then I have this huge bubble in my stomach, ugh. Had some tests done, and the doc mentioned something about pH levels but didn’t clarify a lot. Is curd acidic or basic? Does it really matter? Because some people say it's good for digestion but then I found a post saying it can cause acidity. I even tried googling it, lol, but there are mixed answers!! I usually have it with rice or curry, and now I’m scared it might be causing my bloating. I really like eating it, you know? But if is curd acidic or basic is something that could be affecting my stomach, I am thinking about cutting it out. Should I even consider switching to a different dairy to avoid this? Or is there some other way to enjoy curd without the bad effects? Really looking for some advice!

Doctors' responses

Curd, or what you might know as yogurt, is generally considered to be slightly acidic. This acidity ranges from 4.4 to 4.8 on the pH scale, due to the lactic acid released as bacteria ferment the lactose in milk. This level of acidity is typically beneficial for digestion, as it can help maintain a healthy gut flora, which supports a balanced digestive system. However, individual reactions to curd can vary due to personal constitution or other dietary elements involved in your meals.

Given your symptoms of bloating, you may be experiencing a reaction to lactose or perhaps an imbalance in your digestive fire, or ‘Agni’, as we call it in Ayurveda. Bloating can also be a sign of improper food combinations, which can cause digestive distress in certain individuals. Mixing curd with incompatible foods like fish or heating it before consumption might exacerbate these issues.

For those who are prone to ‘Kapha’ imbalance, characterized by symptoms like bloating, heaviness, and congestion, consuming curd—especially in the evening—can aggravate symptoms. In Ayurveda, curd is best consumed during the day, preferably at lunch, when the digestive system is more active. It’s advisable to consume curd fresh, with a little black pepper or turmeric, to aid digestion.

Switching to alternatives like buttermilk or curd made from goat’s milk might offer a gentler option, as these are usually more easily digestible. Or you might try consuming curd with a pinch of ‘Hing’ (asafoetida) or cumin powder. Pay attention to food combinations and eat curd as part of a balanced meal to see if your bloating subsides. Reducing intake of carbonated drinks, fermented foods, and limiting stress can also help improve digestion.

If curd continues to cause adverse reactions, it might be worthwhile to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalized diet plan that aligns with your dosha and addresses your specific digestive concerns. Balancing the rest of your diet, calming routines, eating 2-3 hours before bed, and managing stress are crucial steps too. These small daily habits can significantly alleviate discomfort and support your digestive health.
