Neuropathy, particularly in the feet, can significantly affect your daily life. In Ayurveda, it’s considered as a Vata imbalance, where the nervous tissues are primarily affected. The aim would be to pacify Vata dosha and support nerve health. First, consider your diet; incorporating warm, moist foods can be beneficial to balance Vata. Try cooking with ghee and opt for grounding substances like sweet potatoes and squash. Avoid raw, dry, or cold foods, like salads or ice cream.
In terms of herbs, Ashwagandha and Bala are valuable for nerve health. Ashwagandha can be consumed as a powder, 1/2 tsp twice daily, mixed with warm milk. Bala can be used in a similar way. These herbs have rasayana properties, which means they rejuvenate the body and enhance nerve strength.
For external treatment, consider Abhyanga, an Ayurvedic oil massage, utilizing Mahanarayan oil or sesame oil. Massage your feet for about 15-20 minutes every day, preferably in the evening when Vata is high. This will also improve blood flow and reduce stiffness.
Pranayama is crucial - practices like Anulom Vilom can help balance the nervous system and should be done 10 minutes in morning and evening. Additionally, be sure to maintain a routine - waking, eating, sleeping at the same time daily to support vata balance.
While these are supportive measures, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider, as neuropathy often requires a comprehensive approach. Investigating underlying factors like blood sugar levels or vitamin deficiencies might be necessary. Never delay in seeking medical care if symptoms progress or you experience severe pain or impairment.
