Doctors' responses

Ayurveda views rheumatoid arthritis (RA), or “Amavata”, as a chronic condition that’s driven by the accumulation of toxins (ama) and an imbalance primarily in Vata dosha. The aim of Ayurvedic treatment is not to provide a “cure” in the Western sense but to manage symptoms and possibly achieve a significant reduction in flare-ups. While it’s challenging to say Ayurveda can permanently cure RA, many patients report lasting relief from symptoms through sustained Ayurvedic practices.

Tackling RA in Ayurveda involves a multi-dimensional approach. First and foremost, diet plays a crucial role. Focus on a Vata-pacifying diet — warm, easy-to-digest cooked foods like soups and stews. Avoid consumption of cold, dry, processed foods that can aggravate Vata and increase ama. Ghee and turmeric are beneficial—consider including them regularly for their anti-inflammatory properties.

Lifestyle modifications are equally significant. Stress and irregular sleeping patterns can exacerbate Vata disturbances. Establish a consistent daily routine that includes gentle yoga and meditation. Asanas like the cat-cow stretch or gentle twists can promote joint flexibility and alleviate stiffness.

Therapeutic procedures such as Panchakarma may be recommended to expel ama and balance the doshas. However, these should be carried out under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. Regular oil massages using sesame oil can provide lubrication to joints and relief from pain.

Herbal formulations may be helpful. Boswellia serrata (Shallaki) and Ashwagandha are known to mitigate inflammation. Use these cautiously under advice from your Ayurvedic physician.

Finally, remember RA is multifaceted. Despite following these guidelines, it’s essential to maintain communication with your healthcare provider. While Ayurveda may yield improvements in quality of life and reduce symptoms over time, complete suspension of symptoms varies person to person. Always consider integrating Ayurveda with your existing medical treatments for comprehensive care, and never discontinue prescribed medication without professional oversight.
