For osteoporosis and disc degeneration, combining Ayurveda with ongoing medical treatments can be beneficial, but first thing is safety. Osteoporosis weakens bones, so any treatment requires care.
In Ayurveda, strengthening bone tissue (asthi dhatu) and balancing Vata dosha is crucial for your mother. Consider incorporating these practices to support her overall condition.
Diet is key in Ayurveda for strengthening bones. Increase intake of dairy like milk and cheese, which is rich in calcium. Also, include sesame seeds, almonds, and leafy greens. These are believed to nourish asthi dhatu. An herbal formulation like Ashwagandha can aid in building strength and managing Vata imbalances, though you may want to consult with a local practitioner to ensure it’s suitable for her.
A moderate and regular exercise is essential but avoid anything high-impact. Gentle yoga postures that support spine health and mobility might be helpful. Encourage her to practice under guidance to avoid strain. Pranayama, or breathing exercises, may also aid in improving mobility and reducing stress.
Therapies like Kati Basti, an Ayurvedic treatment targeting the lower back with warm herbal oils, might offer relief from pain, possibly enhancing mobility. However, these should be performed by a trained Ayurvedic therapist.
Since she’s already under medication, continue following her orthopedic doctor’s advice. Keep them informed about any alternative treatment you’re considering. Regular monitoring of her condition is important to prevent any complications.
Finally, staying hydrated helps maintain tissue health, so encourage regular fluid intake throughout the day. Each recommendation needs to be adapted based on her tolerance and response, so take things slowly and steadily.
