Doctors' responses
Plagiocephaly, characterized by an asymmetrical shape of the head, is typically best addressed through intervention during infancy when the skull is still malleable. By age 17, the bones of the skull have largely ossified, meaning they’ve hardened and become less pliable. This generally limits non-surgical interventions for altering the shape of the head.
However, in Ayurveda, we focus on holistic well-being and while structural corrections at this age are challenging, we can definitely aim at improving overall health and confidence.
One potential area of attention could be balance in her body-mind constitution, or doshas. Encouraging practices that promote Vata balance can be helpful for grounding and mental well-being. Vata imbalance can manifest as anxiety or restlessness and could impact her self-confidence. Ensuring a Vata-pacifying lifestyle involves warm, nourishing foods, consistent daily routines, and calming practices like Yoga and meditation.
For the diet, focus on warm, cooked meals with healthy fats, spices like cumin, ginger and turmeric. They support digestion (‘agni’) and help in maintaining overall health. Regular Abhyanga (oil massage) with sesame oil can also provide soothing effects for both, the body and mind, aiding in balance of Vata.
However, it’s critical to consult with medical specialists if you’re considering surgical intervention. Craniofacial or cosmetic surgery could offer options to change head shape, but it requires professional assessment. Remember, fostering self-esteem involves expressing love and acceptance for her as she is—an important part of any holistic approach.
