When pneumonia is the issue, it’s vital first to follow the hospital’s guidance and ensure all necessary medical interventions are in place. Clearing phlegm from the lungs is indeed important, and from a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, we focus on managing the kapha dosha imbalance that often contributes to such congestion.
Firstly, maintaining warm environments will help as cold can aggravate kapha, leading to more mucus. Ensure your dad stays warm.
For dietary measures, he should focus on warm, light, and easily digestible foods. Hot soups, especially those with spices like ginger and black pepper, can be quite beneficial. These have natural anti-inflammatory properties and help in liquefying the mucus, making it easier to expel — a critical process in managing kapha imbalances.
Herbal teas like a tulsi (holy basil), ginger, and licorice root can also be effective. These herbs have mucolytic properties, which help break down the mucus. For preparing the tea, steep a few tulsi leaves, a small piece of ginger, and a bit of licorice root into hot water and let it sit for a few minutes before straining and drinking. Consumption should be 2-3 times daily.
Steam inhalation can be done with eucalyptus oil. Recommended time is about 10-15 minutes once or twice a day. This method helps open respiratory pathways and assists in clearing out mucus.
Remember, however, to coordinate with the healthcare providers, especially considering any current treatments. It’s key not to interfere or delay any prescribed medical treatments.
