HELLO,

What is happening in her brain? As we grow older, brain cells slowly lose strength. In some people, this process becomes faster.
In her case: -She forgets things -But she can still do household work independently -She recognizes people and surroundings -Her judgment and daily skills are mostly intact

This suggests early-stage dementia / mild cognitive impairment, not advanced dementia.

Think of it like this: “The brain is still working, but memory circuits are becoming weak.” This stage can remain stable for many years if managed correctly.

Why Dementia Happens Common causes in elderly 1)Age-related brain cell degeneration 2)Reduced blood flow to brain (silent strokes, vascular changes) 3)Vitamin deficiencies (B12, D) 4)Stress, depression, sleep disturbance 5)Post-viral inflammation (COVID may worsen cognition & smell) Dementia does NOT mean madness, and does NOT mean total dependency immediately.

Treatment goals - Slow disease progression
-Preserve independence
- Improve memory confidence
- Prevent complications
- Maintain dignity and quality of life If these goals are met → treatment is successful.

Current Allopathic Medicines – Why They Are Given

She is already on appropriate neurological treatment.

1) Donepezil -Improves communication between brain cells -Slows memory decline -Keeps daily functioning stable = Must not be stopped suddenly

2) Piracetam (Nootropil 800 mg) -Improves brain metabolism and oxygen use -Helps attention and clarity

3) Ecosprin 75 mg -Prevents tiny blood clots -Protects against silent strokes that worsen dementia

4) Nexito 5 mg -Controls anxiety/depression -Depression can mimic or worsen memory loss

5) Folvit -Supports nerve health -Prevents vitamin-related cognitive worsening = These medicines do not show dramatic improvement, but they prevent worsening.

In Ayurveda, this condition resembles -Smritibhramsha (memory disturbance) -Vata predominance in brain (Majja Dhatu Kshaya) With age: -Vata increases -Dryness increases -Nervous system weakens

Internal Medicines Medhya Rasayana (Brain-supporting herbs)

• BRAHMI VATI= 1 tab twice daily after meals

• SHANKHAPUSHPI SYRUP= 2 tsp at night

• ASHWAGANDHA CHURNA= 1 tsp with warm milk twice daily

1. TAGAR CAPSULE= 1 cap at night

= Usually given for 3–6 months minimum to see benefit
 External Therapy

1)Head Oil Massage -Warm Brahmi oil -10–15 min, 3–4 times/week =Calms nervous system

2) NASYA= instill 2 drops of brahmi oil in each nostril daily morning = best for dementia

Yoga Asanas -Tadasana -Vajrasana -Pawanmuktasana -Slow Surya Namaskar (if fit) = Improves blood flow to brain

Pranayama -Anulom Vilom= balances brain -Bhramari= reduces anxiety -Deep breathing= oxygenation Avoid forceful Kapalbhati in elderly

Diet -Green leafy vegetables -Nuts (almonds, walnuts – soaked) -Cow ghee (small quantity) -Turmeric, ginger -Fruits like berries, apple, pomegranate -Adequate water

AVOID -Sugar -Fried foods -Excess tea/coffee -Refined flour

Diet should be simple, warm, nourishing

Home Remedy -Warm milk + pinch of turmeric at night -Almond paste (2 soaked almonds) in morning -Daily oil massage of feet before sleep -Reading aloud daily (even newspapers)

Post-COVID Loss of Smell (Anosmia) Why it happens -COVID damages smell nerves -Regeneration is slow in elderly

Best proven method Olfactory training -Smell clove, coffee, lemon, rose -Twice daily -Minimum 3 months

Recovery may be -Partial -Slow -Or absent (still safe condition)

What Family Must Do -Most Important -Do NOT argue about forgetfulness -Do NOT repeatedly correct her -Maintain routine -Give reassurance -Keep environment familiar -Encourage independence

Emotional security slows dementia progression.

-Her condition is not advanced -She can remain stable for many years -Lifestyle + routine + medicines together matter more than changing drugs -No system of medicine offers a “cure” -Aim for stability, dignity, independence

DO FOLLOW

HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL

THANK YOU

DR. MAITRI ACHARYA

Hello I get what you’re going through. It’s super tough watching someone you care about become forgetful, especially when they’re otherwise doing great. The bright side is that if it’s early dementia, you can really slow things down with the right meds, food, habits, and keeping their mind active.

YOUR CONCERN

* She’s 73. * Her memory’s been slipping for over a year. * She still handles her daily stuff on her own. * She’s on long-term neuro meds. * She lost her sense of smell after COVID. * She’s physically active.

This looks like:

* Memory loss * Nerve tissue issues * Being older makes Vata issues more common. * Smell loss from COVID messing with Prana Vata and Kapha. * Ojas (vitality) going down a bit.

This all points to early dementia, which is actually the best time to step in.

Real talk: No treatment approach, be it mainstream medicine, Ayurveda, or Homeopathy, can fix dementia completely.

But Ayurveda can: * Slow it down * Help with memory * Keep her independent * Boost her overall quality of life for years

AYURVEDIC PLAN (Totally safe with her current meds)

She can take these along with what her neurologist has prescribed:

1. Brahmi Capsule One capsule twice a day after eating. (Helps memory, focus, and feeds the nerves.)

2. Ashwagandha Capsule One capsule at night after dinner. (Keeps nerves from going bad and helps with sleep.)

3.Saraswatarishta 15 ml with the same amount of water after lunch and dinner. (A classic memory booster.)

👉For Smell Loss (From COVID)

This is because the nasal nerves are blocked.

Nasya (Really works!) Every morning: Two drops of Anu Taila / Shadbindu Taila in each nostril. (Do this after brushing, on an empty stomach.)

This often gets the smell back in a month or two.

BRAIN FRIENDLY DIET

Make sure she gets: * Cow ghee – a teaspoon a day * Soaked almonds (4–5) * Walnuts (2) * Milk with turmeric at night * Fresh fruit * Moong dal, veggies

❌Avoid * Refined sugar * Fried stuff * Cold drinks * Too much tea/coffee * Packaged snacks

MIND AND LIFESTYLE (The Real Deal)

This does more to slow dementia than any medicine: * Walks every day * Listening to her old favorite songs * Reading spiritual books * Crosswords or simple puzzles * Talking about old memories * A regular schedule (meals and sleep at the same times)

PANCHAKARMA (Long-Term) Once things are stable, think about: * Shirodhara (pouring oil on the head) – once a month * Abhyanga (oil massage on the head and feet) * Easy yoga and breathing exercises

These help keep the brain in good shape.

About the Smell Thing Smell loss after COVID might take: * 3–12 months to come back But Nasya is the best bet.

Homeopathy usually takes too long or doesn’t work well for nerve damage.

With Ayurveda consistently: –Memory becomes more stable –Less confusion –Better sleep –Less worry –Slower decline –Better mood and more alert

It won’t reverse things, but it can control them really well.

She’s at the perfect stage to do something about this. She’s active, knows what’s going on, and is independent – that’s a huge advantage.

Warm Regards Dr. Snehal Vidhate

AT THIS STAGE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW IS THAT SHE IS FUNCTIONALLY DOING WELL WHICH MEANS THE DISEASE IS SLOW MOVING AND STILL IN A COMPENSATED PHASE AND THAT IS A POSITIVE SIGN

FIRST ABOUT THE MEDICINES SHE IS TAKING THESE ARE STANDARD LONG TERM MEDICINES FOR COGNITIVE SUPPORT AND STABILITY AND IF SHE IS TOLERATING THEM WELL AND HER DAY TO DAY FUNCTION IS MAINTAINED THEY SHOULD NOT BE STOPPED OR CHANGED WITHOUT A NEUROLOGIST REVIEW THEY DO NOT CURE DEMENTIA BUT THEY HELP SLOW PROGRESSION AND MAINTAIN DAILY FUNCTION

TO PREVENT AGGRAVATION THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS ARE ROUTINE STRUCTURE AND MENTAL ENGAGEMENT SHE SHOULD CONTINUE DOING DOMESTIC WORK WALKING SIMPLE DECISION MAKING AND DAILY ACTIVITIES WITHOUT OVERPROTECTION USING THE BRAIN DAILY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY MEDICINE A FIXED DAILY ROUTINE WITH SAME WAKE UP TIME MEAL TIME AND SLEEP TIME IS VERY IMPORTANT

DIET PLAYS A BIG ROLE SHE SHOULD HAVE SIMPLE FRESH HOME COOKED FOOD ADEQUATE PROTEIN GOOD FATS LIKE GHEE OR OLIVE OIL GREEN VEGETABLES FRUITS AND AVOID PROCESSED FOOD SUGAR EXCESS AND DEHYDRATION WATER INTAKE MUST BE ADEQUATE EVEN IF SHE DOES NOT FEEL THIRST

SLEEP QUALITY MUST BE PROTECTED NO DAYTIME SLEEP BEYOND SHORT REST LIMIT SCREEN EXPOSURE IN EVENING AND ENSURE CALM ENVIRONMENT AT NIGHT POOR SLEEP ACCELERATES COGNITIVE DECLINE

ABOUT LOSS OF SMELL AFTER COVID THIS IS VERY COMMON IN ELDERLY AND OFTEN RECOVERS PARTIALLY VERY SLOWLY OLFACTORY TRAINING IS MORE EFFECTIVE THAN MEDICINES THIS MEANS DAILY SMELLING OF STRONG NATURAL SCENTS LIKE COFFEE CLOVES CAMPHOR ROSE OR LEMON FOR A FEW MINUTES DAILY THIS STIMULATES THE OLFACTORY NERVES AND CAN HELP GRADUAL IMPROVEMENT

HOMEOPATHY NOT SHOWING RESULTS IN FOUR MONTHS IS NOT UNUSUAL IN NEURODEGENERATIVE CONDITIONS YOU SHOULD NOT CONTINUE ANY TREATMENT IF THERE IS NO OBJECTIVE BENEFIT

MOST IMPORTANTLY CONTROL ALL RISK FACTORS REGULAR CHECK OF BLOOD PRESSURE BLOOD SUGAR THYROID VITAMIN B12 AND VITAMIN D EVEN MILD DEFICIENCIES CAN WORSEN MEMORY ENSURE HEARING AND VISION ARE CHECKED BECAUSE SENSORY LOSS MAKES DEMENTIA APPEAR WORSE

EMOTIONAL ENVIRONMENT IS CRUCIAL NO CORRECTING NO SCOLDING NO TESTING HER MEMORY SPEAK CALMLY GIVE TIME TO RESPOND AND MAINTAIN DIGNITY STRESS AND FEAR ACCELERATE DECLINE MORE THAN AGE

AT THIS STAGE THE GOAL IS NOT REVERSAL BUT SLOWING PROGRESSION AND PRESERVING QUALITY OF LIFE AND FROM WHAT YOU DESCRIBE SHE IS DOING FAIRLY WELL WITH THE RIGHT SUPPORT AND MONITORING IF YOU WANT I CAN ALSO GUIDE YOU ON SIMPLE DAILY BRAIN STIMULATION ACTIVITIES AND CAREGIVER DO AND DONTs TO KEEP HER STABLE FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE

At the age of seventy three the kind of forgetfulness you are describing while she is still managing her daily domestic work fits with a slow progressive memory decline rather than advanced dementia and this stage is very important because here the focus is not just medicines but preserving brain nourishment circulation and mental clarity through daily habits food and gentle therapies From an ayurvedic understanding this condition is mainly related to vata dosha increase in the nervous system along with age related dhatu kshaya especially majja dhatu so the aim is to slow further degeneration calm vata improve cerebral nutrition and maintain routine stability rather than expecting reversal First and most important is daily routine she should wake up and sleep at fixed times eat meals on time avoid long fasting avoid excessive screen exposure and avoid mental stress even small emotional disturbances can worsen memory in elderly people Diet should be warm freshly cooked easy to digest and nourishing ghee is very important one to two teaspoons daily with food if digestion allows cow milk at night with a pinch of turmeric and nutmeg is beneficial if there is no intolerance dry cold refrigerated packaged food should be avoided completely Regular oil application is extremely useful gentle abhyanga with warm sesame oil or bala ashwagandha oil to scalp soles and body three to four times a week followed by warm bath helps calm vata improves sleep and supports brain function Regarding medicines long term allopathic medicines already prescribed by neurologist should not be stopped abruptly they can be continued while ayurvedic rasayana support is added Classical ayurvedic formulations like brahmi ghrita kalyanaka ghrita mandukaparni brahmi shankhapushpi and ashwagandha when given in correct dose and form can help slow progression improve recall and reduce anxiety but these must be individualized based on digestion bowel pattern sleep and blood pressure Panchakarma in a very mild form like matra basti with medicated oil or ghrita nasya in very low dose under supervision can be extremely beneficial in such patients but only after proper assessment and not aggressively Loss of smell after covid indicates lingering prana vata disturbance nasya with anu taila or plain cow ghee in very small quantity daily can help gradually but patience is required recovery is slow in elderly Mental stimulation is equally important she should be encouraged to chant prayers listen to familiar music recall old memories engage in light conversation and simple memory exercises without pressure Homeopathy sometimes takes long time and response varies so lack of result does not mean nothing can be done but at this stage ayurvedic supportive care lifestyle and rasayana therapy are more suitable Please understand that prevention of aggravation is a realistic and achievable goal slowing decline maintaining independence and quality of life

Current allopathic medicines are standard & appropriate for vascular/cognitive support + mood. Do NOT stop or change them without neurologist approval. Early dementia progresses slowly in active elderly patients. Goal is slow progression, maintain independence & quality of life.

Recommended Ayurvedic Supportive Plan Medicines 1 Brahmi Vati (Gold or Saraswatarishta) – 1 tablet / 15 ml twice daily after food (best brain tonic, memory & cognition support) 2 Ashwagandha Lehyam – 5 gm night with warm milk (reduces anxiety, improves sleep & energy – very gentle at 73) 3 Shankhpushpi Syrup – 10 ml night (calms mind, supports memory & mood) 4 Mandukaparni Churna – 1–2 gm morning with water (excellent for early dementia & concentration)

For Anosmia Anu Taila Nasya – 2 drops each nostril morning (warm) – classic Ayurvedic treatment for smell restoration & nasal health Continue daily for 2–3 months

Daily Routine & Diet Continue active routine – very good for brain health Add: warm milk + ghee + 4 soaked almonds + 2 dates night Brain foods: walnut (2 halves daily), pomegranate, beetroot juice 100 ml Avoid: cold food/drinks, heavy fried items, late dinner 10 min Anulom-Vilom pranayama daily (improves brain circulation & mood)

Neurologist follow-up every 3–6 months – repeat MMSE/MoCA, brain imaging if progression Do NOT stop allopathic medicines – Ayurveda is supportive only If homeopathy gave zero result the stop it (no need to continue) Start – Brahmi Vati + Anu Taila Nasya + warm milk routine today (after neurologist nod). She can stay independent & comfortable for many years with this combined approach.
